Whether you've lived here for years or you're visiting to explore a potential move, August has a quiet magic all its own. Here's what I'm looking forward to this month.
\"Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith\" at Selby Gardens
One of the most compelling exhibitions of the summer is happening at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota. \"Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith\" runs through September 13 and features the work of the legendary American photographer. Known for her iconic celebrity portraits and fine art photography, Goldsmith's images are displayed both indoors and outdoors, woven into the landscape of Selby's tropical gardens.
The exhibition includes portraits of music legends like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, and Michael Jackson, alongside more intimate fine art pieces. The way the installation blends art with the natural environment is extraordinary — you're walking through a tropical paradise and encountering museum-quality photography at every turn. Selby Gardens is about 20 minutes from Palmer Ranch, and the downtown bayfront setting makes it an ideal morning or afternoon outing. I recommend visiting on a weekday when the gardens are quieter.
TikiFest & Celtic Summer Jam
Saturday, August 1 is a busy day for festivals on the Gulf Coast, with two great options depending on which direction you want to head.
TikiFest returns to Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda, about 30 minutes south of Palmer Ranch. This is a full day of tropical-themed fun with live music, tiki-themed arts and crafts, tropical drinks, and that laid-back island vibe that Fishermen's Village does so well. The waterfront setting on Charlotte Harbor is beautiful, and the whole village is walkable with plenty of shops and restaurants.
Closer to home, the Celtic Summer Jam sponsored by the New World Celts is happening on August 1 at a location in Sarasota County, featuring live Celtic music all day, whiskey tastings, and raffles. The Celtic music scene in Southwest Florida is surprisingly active, and this event draws a wonderful crowd of enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
My August Evening Rituals
As the heat of the day fades, August evenings on the Gulf Coast are pure magic. Here are a few of my favorite rituals:
- Sunset on Siesta Key. The quartz sand stays cool underfoot as the sun drops, and the sky puts on a show every single night. I try to catch sunset at Siesta Beach at least once a week in August.
- Dinner at Marina Jacks. There's something special about waterfront dining in August — the bay breeze carries the heat away, and the sunset views over Sarasota Bay are spectacular from their patio.
- Evening walks on the Legacy Trail. The Palmer Ranch section of the Legacy Trail is beautiful in the late afternoon light, with the shade from the tree canopy and the breeze off the preserve. I take my dogs out most evenings.
- St. Armands Circle stroll. The shops stay open later in summer, and the Circle has a relaxed, festive energy on warm August evenings. Grab a gelato, window shop, and listen to the live music that seems to drift from every corner.
Farmers Market Summer Bounty
August is peak season for local produce on the Gulf Coast. The Sarasota Farmers Market (Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the Venice Farmers Market (Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Venice Avenue) are both bursting with local corn, tomatoes, okra, peaches, mangoes, fresh herbs, and stunning tropical flowers. I've been making a weekly market run part of my routine all summer, and the quality just keeps getting better.
