I have to share something personal here, because it's a big part of why I feel so strongly about this community. My son Joey plays on a Special Olympics Pickleball team, and it has been one of the most fantastic experiences for our family. Watching him compete, grow in confidence, and be part of a team that celebrates every player — it's something I'll never take for granted.
When we lived in Michigan, pickleball wasn't nearly the phenomenon it is today. It was still growing, still finding its footing. But here in Sarasota, it has absolutely taken off — and that's been a wonderful thing for Joey. Pickleball has become one of his favorite activities, and the fact that the sport is so accessible and so widely played here means there are real opportunities for him to participate, compete, and enjoy the social side of the game.
What I love most about the Sarasota and Palmer Ranch area is how inclusive this community truly is. The local support for Special Olympics programs and adaptive sports is genuine — it's not just lip service. Families like ours are welcomed, and programs like Special Olympics Pickleball give athletes of all abilities a place to belong. Potter Park is my go-to recommendation because it's right in Palmer Ranch. No need to drive far — just grab your paddle and head over. It's a great way to meet neighbors too.
Bee Ridge Park
Multiple courts
Popular alternative for South Sarasota residents. Good court conditions and parking.
Julie's Take
Bee Ridge is a bit further but worth the drive if Potter Park is busy. The courts are well-kept and the atmosphere is welcoming.
Pompano Park
12 courts
One of the larger public facilities — 12 courts available sunrise to 10 PM. Excellent for league play.

If you're serious about pickleball, Pompano Park is the place. Twelve courts means you'll almost always find a game. The evening lighted play is fantastic.
Twin Lakes Park
Newly developed
New courts currently under development — check for availability.
