Tamiami Tap — Sarasota
Tamiami Tap on South Osprey Avenue is one of the most dog-friendly restaurants in the entire city. They have a dedicated "Mutt Menu" with items like the Doggie Dog, Barker Burger, and Puppy Poultry. Yes, a menu for your dog. The patio is spacious, shaded by umbrellas and trees, and the staff brings out water bowls without being asked. The people-watching is excellent too. It is a laid-back gastropub with craft beer and a menu that runs from burgers to salads to tacos. The prices are moderate. Entrees run $12 to $18.

Nearby walk: After your meal, take a stroll down to Southside Village or Bayfront Park. Both are about a mile away and have shaded sidewalks perfect for a post-meal leg stretch.
The Old Salty Dog — Siesta Key & Venice
The Old Salty Dog is a Gulf Coast institution with two locations that welcome dogs. The Siesta Key location on Ocean Boulevard has a covered deck where dogs are welcome. The Venice location on South Tamiami Trail has an outdoor patio that is equally pet-friendly. The Venice location even offers a dedicated dog menu. This is classic Florida beach food. Fish and chips, grouper sandwiches, key lime pie, and cold beer. The atmosphere is casual and lively. The prices are reasonable. Sandwiches and entrees run $10 to $18.

Nearby walk: The Siesta Key location is a short walk from Siesta Beach. The Venice location is near the Venice Fishing Pier and the walking path along the Intracoastal. Both are perfect for a sunset walk after dinner.
Daiquiri Deck St. Armands Circle — Sarasota
Daiquiri Deck on St. Armands Circle is a lively, colorful spot with a large outdoor deck that welcomes dogs. It is one of the most popular restaurants on the Circle, and for good reason. The frozen daiquiris are the draw, but the food is solid too. Tacos, burgers, seafood, and shareable plates. The atmosphere is festive and fun. Prices are moderate. Most entrees run $12 to $20.
Dog-friendly setup: Water bowls, large shaded deck, a very social atmosphere where dogs are part of the scene.
Nearby walk: St. Armands Circle itself is a beautiful walking loop lined with shops and boutiques. After your meal, walk the circle with your dog or head a few blocks south to Lido Beach for a sunset stroll (dogs on leash are welcome on the beach before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM during summer).
O'Leary's Tiki Bar & Grill — Downtown Sarasota
O'Leary's Tiki Bar & Grill sits right on Sarasota Bay with a view of the marina. The outdoor tiki bar area and the sandy beachfront seating are both dog-friendly. The staff regularly brings out water bowls, and the atmosphere is classic Florida waterfront. The menu is seafood-centric with grouper sandwiches, fish tacos, raw bar items, and cold drinks. The vibe is relaxed and unhurried. Prices range from $12 to $25.

Gecko's Grill & Pub — Hillview Street (Southside Village), Sarasota
Gecko's Grill & Pub has several locations around Sarasota, but the Hillview Street location in Southside Village is the only one that allows dogs on the patio. It is worth knowing because Gecko's is a local favorite for burgers, wings, salads, and craft beer in a friendly, neighborhood pub setting. The patio is covered and comfortable. The prices are very reasonable. Most items run $10 to $16.
Dog-friendly setup: Water bowls (ask your server), covered patio, neighborhood pub atmosphere. Note: only the Hillview Street location allows dogs. The other locations do not.
Nearby walk: Southside Village is a charming walkable neighborhood with boutique shops and tree-lined streets. Southside Elementary Park is a few blocks away and has grass and shaded areas for a quick dog walk.
Dockside Waterfront Grill — Venice
Dockside Waterfront Grill on North Tamiami Trail in Venice is a gem for dog owners. The outdoor patio overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway, and the staff welcomes leashed dogs. The menu is Gulf Coast seafood with a few landlubber options. Grouper, fried shrimp, grilled fish, and a very good Key lime pie. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly. Entrees run $13 to $24.

Nearby walk: The Venice Fishing Pier and the Venice Beach boardwalk are a short drive or a long walk south along the bay. The walking path along the Intracoastal is scenic and shaded in parts.
Pelican Alley Restaurant — Nokomis
Pelican Alley Restaurant on Albee Road West in Nokomis is a waterfront spot with a relaxed, old-Florida feel. The outdoor patio overlooks the bay, and dogs are welcome. The menu is classic Gulf Coast. Fresh seafood, oysters, crab cakes, and a solid raw bar. The atmosphere is unhurried and charming. It is the kind of place where you can sit for a while and let the breeze and the view do their work. Entrees run $15 to $28.

Nearby walk: Casey Key is just across the bridge and offers a quiet, scenic beach road perfect for a sunset walk with your dog. The Nokomis Beach area is also nearby, though dogs must be on a leash.
BrewBurgers — Venice
BrewBurgers on South Tamiami Trail in Venice is a casual, creative burger joint with a dog-friendly patio. The outdoor tables are shaded by umbrellas and awnings, and the staff is welcoming to four-legged guests. The menu features gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries, craft beer, and milkshakes. They also offer pup patties from a partial dog menu, so your dog can eat too. Prices are moderate. Burgers run $10 to $15.

Nearby walk: Venice Avenue downtown is a pleasant walk with shops and a pedestrian-friendly streetscape. The Venice Train Depot and the surrounding park area are also good for a quick walk after a meal.
Tips for Dining Out with Your Dog on the Gulf Coast
After a lot of patio meals, I have learned a few things that make the experience better for everyone. Here are my tips for dining out with your pup in Sarasota, Palmer Ranch, Nokomis, and Venice.
- Call ahead. Pet policies can change seasonally or with management. A quick phone call before you head out saves disappointment.
- Bring a portable water bowl. Even at restaurants that provide bowls, having your own for the car ride and the walk there is a good habit.
- Go early or go late. Summer afternoons are hot. Aim for a late breakfast, an early lunch, or an evening dinner when the patio is cooler and more comfortable for your dog.
- Keep your dog on a short leash. Not every diner is a dog person. A well-behaved, leashed dog makes the whole patio community happier.
- Bring treats. Even if the restaurant does not have a dog menu, your pup will appreciate a reward for being good through your meal.
- Know the county rules. Sarasota County allows restaurants with a "Doggie Dining" permit to serve dogs on outdoor patios. Most of the restaurants listed here have that permit. If you are unsure, ask.
Where to Walk Before or After Your Meal
A patio meal is even better when you pair it with a good walk. Here are some of my favorite dog-friendly spots near the restaurants listed above.
- The Legacy Trail — Runs through the Palmer Ranch corridor and is one of the best walking paths in the area. Multiple access points, shaded sections, and a flat, easy surface. It is my daily go-to with my dogs.
- Brohard Paw Park & Beach — Venice's dedicated off-leash dog beach. A perfect pre-dinner or weekend morning destination. It is about a 20-minute drive from the Palmer Ranch area.
- The Bay — The waterfront park in downtown Sarasota is dog-friendly and has beautiful walking paths along the bay. It is a great spot for a post-meal walk with sunset views.
- St. Armands Circle — The loop around the Circle is a pleasant walk with shops, galleries, and plenty of other dogs to say hello to. It is the perfect pre-dinner stroll.
- Venice Avenue — The pedestrian-friendly main street of Venice is a charming walk with historic buildings, boutique shops, and a relaxed pace.
Why Patio Dining Matters When You Are Choosing a Home
