Brohard is located just south of the Venice fishing pier, and it stretches along a wide, pet-friendly stretch of beach. The water is shallow and gentle — perfect for dogs who want to wade without dealing with strong currents. Bring towels (you'll need several), fresh water, and a collapsible bowl. The beach has rinse stations for the ride home.
Pro tip from a local: arrive by 7:00 AM on weekdays and you'll practically have the place to yourself. Weekends get busier, but even then it's a friendly, relaxed crowd.
Mid-Morning: Legacy Trail Walk
After the beach, rinse off and head to the Legacy Trail for a shaded morning walk. The trail runs right through the Palmer Ranch corridor, and with the recent improvements — including the new parallel multi-use path — it's better than ever for walking dogs.
The stretch near Talon Preserve and the Oscar Scherer State Park access point is particularly good for dogs. The tree canopy provides solid shade cover, the crushed-shell surface is easy on paws, and you'll pass through some of the most beautiful native Florida landscape in the region. Keep dogs on leash on the main trail, but many of the preserve access points along the way have shaded side paths where you can let them explore.
A 30- to 45-minute morning walk here, before 9:30 AM, is about as good as it gets for dogs in summer. The trail surface stays cooler than pavement, and the canopy cover makes a real difference.
Lunch: Pet-Friendly Patios
One of the things I love about dining on the Gulf Coast is how many restaurants welcome dogs on their patios. A few of my go-tos:
- St. Armands Circle — Several of the Circle's restaurants have outdoor seating that welcomes well-behaved dogs. The atmosphere is unbeatable — you're sitting among the shops and boutiques with a breeze coming off the Gulf. It's one of those Sarasota experiences that never gets old.
- Siesta Key Village — The casual, walkable village on Siesta Key is naturally dog-friendly. Multiple restaurants offer patio seating, and the vibe is laid-back enough that dogs are part of the scene. Grab a table, order something cold, and watch the world go by.
- Venice Avenue — Downtown Venice has a growing number of dog-friendly patios along the main corridor. The pedestrian-friendly streetscape makes it easy to wander with a leashed dog between stops.
Always call ahead to confirm current pet policies — they can shift seasonally — and bring a portable water bowl. Most Gulf Coast restaurants that welcome dogs are genuinely happy about it, not just tolerating it.
Afternoon: Quiet Time & Splash Pads
Mid-July afternoons are for staying cool, and that goes for dogs too. Head back to your Palmer Ranch community for some pool time — many of the communities along the corridor have dog-friendly splash areas or shallow pool entries where pups can cool off. If your community doesn't have one, several of the public parks in Sarasota County have splash pads that are accessible in the late afternoon.
Alternatively, South Venice Ferry Point offers a quieter beach option where dogs on leash can enjoy the shoreline in a less crowded setting than Brohard.
Evening: Sunset Stroll & Dog-Friendly Dining
The best part of a summer day with dogs on the Gulf Coast is the evening. As the sun drops toward the Gulf, the temperature becomes pure magic — warm, breezy, golden. Head to one of the bayfront parks or the Siesta Key access points for a sunset walk.
The Bay waterfront park in downtown Sarasota is a wonderful evening spot — the grounds are dog-friendly, the sunset views over Sarasota Bay are spectacular, and on Thursday evenings you can catch the free Namaste Yoga class while your dogs relax on the lawn nearby.
For dinner, Marina Jacks has a dog-friendly outdoor section with waterfront views. The breeze off the bay keeps things comfortable even in July, and the staff are accustomed to well-behaved dogs joining their owners for an evening meal.
