We have something to brag about on the Gulf Coast: the Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market was just named the nation’s top People’s Choice market in the American Farmland Trust’s 2026 America’s Farmers Market Celebration. As someone who has made the Saturday market a weekly ritual since I moved to Palmer Ranch, that ranking tracks. Here is how I do a market morning, and why this Saturday, October 31, is a particularly good one to come out.
The Morning Routine
The market runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Lemon Avenue and Main Street in downtown Sarasota. My advice is to arrive on the early side: grab coffee from the first stand you smell, then take a slow lap while the produce is still dewy and the cut-flower tables are fully stacked. By the time the 10 a.m. crowd rolls in, I have my citrus, my honey, a loaf or two of fresh bread and a plan for the afternoon.
Because the market sits just a few blocks from the bayfront, I always extend the morning: a stroll past Marina Jacks to watch the boats, then a slow wander back along the water before heading home to the corridor. It is the same loop I put together in my farmers market guide, and it never gets old.
Dog-O-Ween Is This Saturday
If you have a four-legged friend, this Saturday is the one to circle. The market hosts Dog-O-Ween on October 31 from 9 a.m. to noon, a canine costume contest with $15 registration right in the middle of the market. Costumes and pups and produce all in one place, and the market vendors join in on the fun. I bring my own three dogs every year, so if you see a Doberman and two Chihuahuas working the Lemon Avenue runway, come say hi.
Even without the costumes, the market is the best people-watching in town on a Saturday morning, and a wonderful introduction to the area for anyone touring the corridor on a research trip. My dog-friendly guide has the full list of nearby spots for after the market if you come with a pup in tow.
The Market Around the Corner
The downtown market is the headline, but it is not the only game in town. The Venice Farmers Market fills the lawn at City Hall on West Venice Avenue every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and this season brought a welcome addition to the corridor: the Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch, which runs Sundays at Waterside Place through December 28 with more than a hundred vendors on the plaza. A Saturday market downtown, a Sunday market up the corridor, and a midweek stop at Phillippi Farmhouse Market along the Legacy Trail on Wednesdays, and you have the whole week covered.
The market rhythm is one of the things I love most about the Gulf Coast lifestyle, and it is a big part of what I tell relocation buyers to try before they commit: come for a Saturday, do the market the local way, and see if the pace fits. If you are ready to start that conversation, reach out and I will help you plan the visit, and you can end your market morning at the bayfront like a local.
