My First-Week-of-October Itinerary: Cool Trail Mornings, the Saturday Markets & a Bayfront Sunset Clock

October is the month I wait for all year. The oven finally turns off, the mornings turn crisp, and the whole Gulf Coast seems to exhale. I get asked constantly what to do in the first week of October, so here is my personal itinerary, the one I hand to friends visiting the area and to clients who are here trying to fall in love with the place. Spoiler: it works every time.

Morning: The Legacy Trail, Right Out My Back Door

The week starts with the trail. From the Palmer Ranch corridor, the Legacy Trail is minutes away, and October mornings on it are the best kept secret in Sarasota County. There is a three-foot elevation change and a fifty-mile-an-hour breeze, so it feels fifteen degrees cooler, the light through the pines is golden by 8 a.m., and the egrets are out hunting in the ditches. Bring water for the dogs and a hat for yourself. It is also where I do some of my best thinking about which communities to show clients next.

Saturday: The Markets, Then the Bayfront

Saturday belongs to the farmers markets. The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market on Lemon Avenue runs 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. all year, and October is when the citrus starts showing up in real volume. Grab coffee, a pastry, a bag of cut flowers, and wander down Main Street while the downtown wakes up. Closer to home, the Central Sarasota Farmers Market sets up on Beneva Road near the SSQ redevelopment every Saturday morning, which makes it the easiest version of the ritual for the south corridor.

By afternoon, head to the water. My October default is Siesta Beach, where the quartz sand somehow stays cool on your feet even in the afternoon, and the Siesta Key Village is right there for a late lunch. If shark teeth are your thing, Caspersen Beach in Venice delivers a beachcombing hour you cannot match anywhere else nearby. Sunset is the daily appointment: the Siesta Key Drum Circle gathers on the sand about an hour before sundown every Sunday, and the drumming, dancing and flying poi all happen free, on the beach, as the sky goes gold over the Gulf.

Evening: The Bayfront Is a Clock

The week's evenings are booked with ease. Marina Jacks at 2 Marina Plaza keeps the Blue Sunshine Patio and the Deep Six Piano Bar going most nights, with sunset cruises on the Marina Jack II if you want dinner on the water. A few minutes' walk south, The Bay Park begins its month-long One Park FOUR All 4th anniversary celebration with more than 70 free events, kicking off properly with Salsa & Sunsets on Wednesday, October 7. Downtown's Fresh Fridays Season 6 opening, the first Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Festival weekend, and Venice's Friday night concerts at Centennial Park round out the opening stretch. The full week is on the Community Events page, and I post a fresh roundup for each week of the season.

If you are visiting to make the move, this is the week to see the Gulf Coast at its best. Tour the communities in the mornings, then come live the afternoons with me. Reach out and I will build the itinerary around your list.
