Fourth of July weekend is one of my favorite times to be on the Gulf Coast. The summer pace is in full swing, the beaches are warm, and there's a festive energy everywhere you go. As someone who relocated from Michigan and now lives on Palmer Ranch, I still get a little thrill every time I realize that my "holiday weekend" includes barefoot walks on white sand and fireworks reflecting off Gulf waters. Here's how I'd plan the perfect Fourth of July weekend — local-style.
Friday, July 3: Ease Into the Weekend
Start Friday with a morning walk or ride on the Legacy Trail. By late June, the trail is lush with green canopy and the early light is stunning. I try to be out by 7:00 a.m. — before the heat settles in — and the quiet of the trail at that hour is one of the things I love most about living on Palmer Ranch.

Friday evening is the Spirit of '76 block party at Selby Five Points Park in downtown Sarasota, running from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. There'll be live music, local vendors, and a gorgeous projection mapping installation called "Light Up the Sky." It's free, it's creative, and it captures the cultural side of Sarasota beautifully.
Saturday, July 4: The Main Event
Morning: Farmers Market & Beach
Saturday is the big day. I'd start at the Sarasota Farmers Market on Lemon Avenue — it runs from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Grab a fresh coffee from one of the vendors, pick up some local fruit, and browse the artisan stalls. It's lively even on a holiday weekend, and it's the best way to start a Saturday morning anywhere in Sarasota.
After the market, head to the beach. Siesta Key is the obvious choice — that quartz sand is cool under your feet even at midday, and on July 4, the Siesta Key Village parade runs earlier in the day with golf carts decked out in red, white, and blue. It's one of those small-town traditions that feels like it was pulled straight from a Norman Rockwell painting.

Afternoon: A Slow, Beautiful Saturday
Early afternoon is for relaxing. Head home for a dip in the community pool, or grab a shaded table at a waterfront restaurant. If you're near Venice, stroll down Venice Avenue — the shops and dining along the corridor have a charm that's hard to describe until you've walked it. Venice is also hosting its Centennial Independence Day Parade starting at 9:30 a.m. at W. Venice Avenue, so the whole downtown will have a celebratory feel all day.
Evening: Fireworks Over the Gulf
This is the part I never get tired of. As the sun sets, you have several great options:
- Bayfront Park, downtown Sarasota — the city's official fireworks show launches at 9:00 p.m. over Sarasota Bay. Grab a spot on the lawn and watch the fireworks reflect off the water with the city lights behind you.
- Siesta Key Beach — the community fireworks launch right from the beach. Sand between your toes, waves rolling in, and the sky lighting up in color overhead. Unbeatable.
- North Brohard Beach, Venice — Venice's fireworks at 9:00 p.m. close out their Centennial celebration. A wonderful, smaller, more intimate viewing experience.
Pro tip: if you live on Palmer Ranch and have a west-facing water view, you might catch some distant fireworks from your own backyard. It's one of those unexpected perks of the Palmer Ranch lake communities.
Sunday, July 5: The Slow Recovery
Sunday is for recovery. A dog walk on the trail, a late brunch on St. Armands Circle, maybe a kayak trip through the mangroves if the weather holds. The best thing about Fourth of July weekend on the Gulf Coast is that it doesn't feel rushed. The summer pace gives you permission to slow down, and this weekend is the perfect expression of that.
