For my money, the best Halloween night on the Gulf Coast is the one that stays downtown. Sarasota throws a proper block party on Lemon Avenue, The Ringling opens its courtyards for trick-or-treating, and there is live music at almost every corner in between. Here is how I would work Saturday, October 31, if you are up for the full night out, plus a calmer Friday-night option for anyone who wants to ease into the weekend.
The Gator Club Halloween Party on Lemon Avenue
The annual Gator Club Halloween Party takes over Lemon Avenue between Main and Pineapple in downtown Sarasota from 5 p.m. until midnight on Saturday, October 31, with live music, food, drinks and a street full of costumes. It is the closest thing the Gulf Coast has to a classic downtown Halloween block party, right in the heart of the downtown Sarasota arts district. I tell friends to park once, walk the whole night, and let the bayfront breeze do the rest.
If you want to start before nightfall, the second annual Boos & Booze Halloween Bar Crawl begins at 3 p.m. at Raffurty’s Bar & Grill on Main Street, a costume-heavy crawl through the downtown spots. Start there, drift toward Lemon Avenue for the block party, and you have a full arc of a night without ever getting in a car.
Trick-or-Treat at The Ringling
For a calmer, more beautiful start to the evening, The Ringling on Bay Shore Road holds trick-or-treating along the Loggia after sundown on Halloween night, with the grounds dressed up in their seasonal decor. It is a wonderful early-evening stop before the block party gets loud, and the courtyard stroll past the bayfront reminds you why people fall for this town. With ROAR! on view all fall, you can make a whole afternoon of it before the candy starts.
A Pops Concert & a Calmer Friday Night
Not everyone wants the full downtown party, and this year the weekend offers a genuinely nice alternative on Friday night. Hocus Pocus Pops II, a Halloween concert from The Pops Orchestra of Bradenton and Sarasota, plays the Riverview Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 30. It is a festive, movie-score evening that pairs easily with an early dinner downtown.
South of the corridor, Wellen Park’s Spooktacular runs Friday, October 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. with trick-or-treat stations, pumpkin painting, a DJ and live music, a relaxed way to get the season started before the big night. It is about a half-hour down the coast and a favorite stop for the clients I work with in south county.
Make a Weekend of the Season’s Biggest Night
Halloween weekend is really a two-day affair on the Gulf Coast. The 38th Downtown Venice Art Festival fills West Venice Avenue on Saturday and Sunday, Fright Night on St. Armands Circle dresses up the shopping district Saturday evening, and the Sarasota Fine Art Show lands on the bayfront at JD Hamel Park right next to Marina Jacks both days. My full run-down of the season lives in my Community Events guide, and my dining picks cover the spots to close out a long night.
Halloween is also one of the most social weekends of the year in downtown Sarasota, with the season’s first crowds arriving and the whole arts district out on the sidewalks. If you are thinking about making the move and want to see the area during one of its liveliest windows, reach out and I will build a tour day around everything you loved this weekend.
