One of my absolute favorite things about living on the Gulf Coast is the way the dining scene shifts with the seasons. Late August brings a quieter, more relaxed energy to Sarasota's restaurants. The summer crowds thin out just enough that you can actually get a reservation at the places that usually have a wait, and the Taste of Summer promotion means there are creative prix-fixe menus to explore all over town. I have been eating my way through the area this month, and I want to share what is catching my attention.
Taste of Summer: Dining Through August 31
The Taste of Summer promotion runs through August 31 with participating restaurants across Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Siesta Key, and Venice offering specially priced multi-course menus that showcase seasonal ingredients and chef creativity. It is one of those community-wide dining events that makes you want to try somewhere new every week.
A few places I have enjoyed during the promotion include Freckled Fin at Waterside Place (their lakefront patio is perfect for a late summer evening), Libby's Neighborhood Brasserie on South Osprey Avenue (consistently excellent), and The Cottage on Siesta Key (their courtyard patio is dog-friendly and lovely at dusk). Each of these restaurants has created a Taste of Summer menu that highlights what is at its best right now. Think fresh Gulf seafood, heirloom tomatoes, local corn, and tropical fruit desserts.
I have also heard great things about the Waterside Place dining scene in Lakewood Ranch, which is about 15 minutes north of Palmer Ranch. Ford's Garage, Overture Coffee, and Freckled Fin all have outdoor seating and a lively but relaxed atmosphere that makes for a great evening out. If you have not been to Waterside Place yet, it is worth the drive.
Hob Nob Drive-In: An Iconic Sarasota Reopening
One of the most exciting local food stories this year has been the reopening of Hob Nob Drive-In at 1701 North Washington Boulevard in Sarasota. The iconic drive-in, which has been a Sarasota institution for generations, reopened in April 2026 under new ownership and has already become a favorite stop for smash burgers, chicken tenders, and old-school milkshakes.
Hob Nob is the kind of place that feels like pure Florida nostalgia. You order at the window, eat at the outdoor picnic tables under the trees, and watch a steady stream of locals come through for their fix. The hamburgers are simple and excellent, the fries are crispy, and the shakes are thick enough to need a serious straw. It is about 20 minutes from Palmer Ranch but absolutely worth the trip for a casual lunch or early dinner.
The revival of Hob Nob is part of a broader wave of energy in Sarasota's dining scene. New spots like Wolfie's Hand Cut (opening soon at UTC), Delany's Public House on Lakewood Ranch's Main Street, and the arrival of Tampa favorites Olivia and On Swann at UTC later this year have the food community buzzing. And on the Palmer Ranch corridor, the Sarasota Square redevelopment is bringing new dining options including CAVA, Chipotle, and Joe & The Juice in Phase 1. Where I Am Eating This Week
Here is a quick look at my personal dining agenda for the rest of August:
- Marina Jacks for sunset dinner. The Blue Sunshine Patio has live music several nights a week, and the view of the bay at golden hour is unbeatable. I order the grouper sandwich and a Key lime martini and call it a perfect evening.
- Freckled Fin at Waterside Place. The lake views from the patio are lovely, and their brunch menu is worth a Sunday drive up University Parkway. Try the lobster roll.
- The Cottage on Siesta Key. One of the few truly dog-friendly fine-casual dining spots on the Key. Their courtyard is shaded and welcoming, and the she-crab soup is outstanding.
- Owen's Fish Camp. A downtown Sarasota institution tucked away on Burns Court. The low country boil and fried green tomatoes are menu staples for good reason. Reservations recommended.
