Late August on the Gulf Coast has become one of my favorite times of year. The summer crowds have thinned just enough, the sunsets seem to linger a little longer, and there is a certain quiet magic in the air that makes everything feel more personal. This is the time when I lean into the cultural and outdoor experiences that remind me why I chose this stretch of Florida to call home. Here is what I am savoring in these final weeks of summer.
"Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith" at Selby Gardens
If you have not yet visited Marie Selby Botanical Gardens this summer, the current exhibition is worth putting at the top of your list. "Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith" runs through September 13 at the downtown Sarasota campus, and it is one of the most beautiful shows I have seen at Selby in years.
Lynn Goldsmith is a legendary American photographer whose career spans decades of iconic rock and roll portraits, celebrity photography, and fine art. This exhibition pairs her stunning floral photography with intimate portraits of Patti Smith, whom Goldsmith has known since the mid-1970s. The images are presented as diptychs and triptychs throughout the Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum of Botany and the Arts, on the garden grounds, and even in the Selby House Cafe.
What makes this exhibition special is the way Goldsmith's flower studies echo the portraits — there is a shared sensibility, a way of seeing that treats both a blooming orchid and a musician's face with the same reverence. Walking through the galleries and then stepping outside into Selby's tropical gardens is an immersive experience that blurs the line between art and nature. I spent a full afternoon there last week and left feeling genuinely restored.
Selby Gardens is at 1534 Mound Street in downtown Sarasota, less than 20 minutes from the Palmer Ranch corridor. The gardens are open daily, and if you go on a Thursday, admission is discounted for Sarasota County residents. I recommend arriving in the late afternoon so you can experience the outdoor garden exhibits in the softer light before the 5 PM close.
Bachatango Fusion Weekender: Dance and Connection
I mentioned the Bachatango Fusion Weekender in my events roundup, but it deserves a second mention here because it represents something I love about Sarasota's cultural scene: the way unexpected art forms find a home here. Running August 21-23 at Selby Five in downtown Sarasota, this weekend event brings together bachata and tango enthusiasts for workshops, social dancing, and performances.
Even if you are not a dancer, the energy at the Selby Five creative district is worth experiencing. The space itself is a hub for Sarasota's arts community, and watching a room full of people lose themselves in music and movement on a summer evening is a reminder of how vibrant this city's cultural life is year-round.
Midsummer Night Music Festival: Chamber Music Under the Stars
On Wednesday, August 26, the Sarasota Piano Trio performs as part of the Midsummer Night Music Festival at 40 North Adams Drive. The festival brings chamber music to intimate venues across Sarasota, and this late-August performance features works that feel perfectly suited to the season — contemplative, warm, and beautifully crafted.
These concerts draw a wonderful cross-section of the community: longtime residents, seasonal visitors who are starting to return, and new arrivals discovering Sarasota's classical music scene for the first time. The format is relaxed, the acoustics are superb, and the ticket prices are accessible. It is the kind of evening that makes you feel connected to something larger than your own routine.
My End-of-Summer Rituals
As August winds down, I find myself returning to a handful of favorite rituals. Morning walks on the Legacy Trail with my Chihuahuas and Doberman are non-negotiable — the shaded sections near Palmer Ranch are cool enough even in late August, and the sound of birds in the preserves is a daily reset button.
I make a point of catching at least one sunset a week on Siesta Key Beach. The quartz sand stays cool underfoot, and the drum circle gatherings, while smaller in late August than peak season, still draw a wonderful mix of locals and visitors. There is something about watching the sun drop into the Gulf of Mexico that recenters everything.
And then there is the dining. The Taste of Summer citywide dining event runs through August 31, with participating restaurants offering prix-fixe menus at excellent value. I have been working my way through the list, from waterfront spots on Siesta Key to cozy bistros on St. Armands Circle. It is a fantastic way to explore the culinary scene while supporting local restaurants during their quieter season.
Making the Most of These Last Summer Weeks

The pace is human, the venues are accessible, and the community is at its most authentic. There is no pretense, no rush — just good art, good food, and good people.
