The last weekends of summer are a special time on the Gulf Coast. The pace is relaxed, the sunsets are long, and there is just enough on the calendar to keep things interesting without feeling overwhelming. Here is how I am spending the final stretch of August, with plenty of suggestions for things to do near the Palmer Ranch corridor and across Sarasota.
Live Music at The Plaza Waterside Place
One of the best additions to the local social scene this summer has been the Live Music Series at The Plaza at Waterside Place. Running from August 21 through August 29, the series features rotating local musicians performing on the outdoor plaza in the heart of the Lakewood Ranch development. The setting is lovely — fountains, string lights, and a lawn area where families and couples spread out blankets and chairs.
Waterside Place is about 15 minutes north of the Palmer Ranch corridor via Honore Avenue or University Parkway, and it has become a genuine dining destination in its own right. I recommend arriving early to grab dinner at Freckled Fin (their crispy snapper tacos are my go-to) or Ford's Garage for a casual burger and craft beer. After the music, grab a scoop of ice cream or a coffee at Overture Coffee and take a stroll around the lake. It is an easy, low-planning evening that delivers every time.
Making the Most of Taste of Summer's Final Week
The Taste of Summer citywide dining promotion runs through August 31, and participating restaurants across Sarasota are offering prix-fixe menus and seasonal specials. This is your last chance to take advantage of the deals before the promotion ends. I have been slowly working my way through the list, and here are a few standouts worth a trip:
- Marina Jacks (2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota) — their Taste of Summer menu features a Gulf fish preparation that changes with the day's catch. Pair it with a sunset seat on the Blue Sunshine Patio and live music playing in the background.
- Freckled Fin at Waterside Place (1651 Lakefront Drive, Lakewood Ranch) — their summer tasting menu highlights Florida seafood with a creative twist. The outdoor terrace overlooking the lake is ideal for a warm evening.
- Downtown Sarasota participating restaurants — several Main Street spots are running specials through the promotion, including options on the dining guide I have been building on the site.

CoolToday Park Tour and a Day in Wellen Park
The CoolToday Park facility tour on Tuesday, August 25, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. is a great midweek activity. The tour takes you through the Atlanta Braves spring training complex in Wellen Park, including the stadium, clubhouse, training facilities, and practice fields. It is fascinating to see how a professional sports operation runs behind the scenes.
Wellen Park itself is worth exploring. The community continues to grow with new neighborhoods and commercial development, and the downtown-avenue feel along Venice Avenue makes for a pleasant afternoon. After the tour, head south into downtown Venice — about 10 minutes down US-41 Bypass — for lunch on Venice Avenue. The historic district has a number of excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and the awnings that make the main street so charming.
Morning Rides on the Legacy Trail
August mornings on the Legacy Trail are still my favorite way to start a weekend day. The trail catches the morning light beautifully, and the oak canopies along the Palmer Ranch section provide enough shade to keep the ride comfortable even as the temperature climbs. I have been taking my bike from the access point near the Palmer Ranch Publix and riding south toward the Venice extension.
The trail is primarily crushed gravel, which works well for hybrid and mountain bikes. Road bikes with narrow tires can handle the packed sections but may find looser patches tricky. There are water fountains and bench rest stops at regular intervals, and the wildlife sightings are reliable — I often see great blue herons, anhingas, and on one memorable morning, a bald eagle circling over the preserve.
Several Palmer Ranch communities have direct trail access, making it one of the most valuable amenities in the corridor. If you are exploring neighborhoods in the area, trail access is worth considering in your decision.
Sunday at the LWR Market and a Beach Afternoon
Here is a simple weekend plan I have been using all summer: start Sunday morning at the LWR Sunday Market at Waterside Place (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), browse the artisan stalls and local produce, grab brunch, and then head to the beach for the afternoon. Siesta Key is about 20 minutes from Palmer Ranch, and Nokomis Beach is even closer — about 10 minutes via US-41 and Laurel Road.
Nokomis Beach has public parking, a concession stand, and a quieter atmosphere than Siesta Key, making it a great choice for an afternoon without the crowds. The water is clear and calm in late summer, and the sandbars extend far out at low tide. I have been bringing my dogs — the north end of the beach is dog-friendly during certain hours — and letting them splash in the shallow water.
