August on the Gulf Coast has a character all its own. The summer crowds from June and July have thinned out, the beaches feel more spacious, and the evenings carry a gentler breeze that hints at the cooler months ahead. As someone who has called Palmer Ranch home for several years now, I have come to love August for its quieter pace and the way it invites you to slow down and savor the season. Here is what I am looking forward to.
Bubbles Under the Banyans at Selby Gardens
One of my absolute favorite late-summer traditions is the Bubbles Under the Banyans show at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota. Running every Saturday through August 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., this enchanting experience features the Spheres Bubble Show with Blaise Ryndes. An artist who creates incredible, shimmering bubbles under the sprawling canopy of Selby's iconic banyan tree.
The combination is magical: the dappled morning light filtering through the banyan's aerial roots, the floating iridescent bubbles drifting through the tropical air, and the peaceful gardens surrounding you. Children are mesmerized, and honestly, so are adults. It is included with regular Selby Gardens admission, and the Downtown Sarasota campus itself is a treasure. It has bayfront views, orchid collections, and the tropical garden setting that makes Selby one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the country. After the show, I love grabbing a coffee at the Selby cafe and walking through the bonsai collection.
Early Bird Beach Days on Siesta Key
August mornings on Siesta Key are simply unbeatable. The sun rises over the lagoon side of the island around 6:45 a.m., and if you arrive early enough (say, 7 a.m.), you will have stretches of that famous quartz sand almost entirely to yourself. The water is warm, the gulf is often glass-calm in the early hours, and the sand feels cool underfoot before the midday sun warms it up.
I have made a habit of early-morning beach walks with my dogs on Siesta Beach during August. The light is soft and golden, shorebirds are working the tide line, and the whole scene is incredibly peaceful. By 10 a.m., the beach starts to come alive, but those early hours feel like a private paradise. If you have not experienced a weekday morning on Siesta Key in August, put it on your calendar. The parking is easier, the crowds are lighter, and the experience is completely different from the midday peak.
August Evenings on St. Armands Circle
St. Armands Circle takes on a relaxed, unhurried energy in August. The Circle's restaurants and cafes shift to a more leisurely evening pace, with outdoor patio seating that is genuinely comfortable once the sun starts to go down. Some of my favorite spots for an August dinner include the Italian restaurants on the north side of the Circle where the outdoor seating catches the evening breeze off Sarasota Bay.
After dinner, a walk around the Circle is essential. The boutiques stay open late during the summer season, and the tropical landscaping is lit beautifully at night. From there, I often drive across the Ringling Bridge and park at Bayfront Park to watch the sunset over the water. The bridge itself, lit up against the darkening sky, is one of the most photographed spots in Sarasota for good reason.
Dining Along the Palmer Ranch Corridor
Closer to home, the dining scene along the Palmer Ranch corridor on US-41 continues to grow. August is a great time to explore new spots without the winter-season crowds. On Cattlemen Road, the newer restaurants have settled into their rhythms and the kitchens are firing on all cylinders. Whether you are in the mood for sushi, wood-fired pizza, or a leisurely brunch, the options within 10 minutes of Palmer Ranch are impressive and getting better all the time.
