There is something about the final weeks of August on the Gulf Coast. The crowds have thinned from their summer peak, the evenings arrive a little earlier, and a subtle shift in the air hints at the change of seasons ahead. This is my favorite time of year to slow down and savor the everyday rhythms of life in Sarasota. Here is how I am spending these last golden weeks of summer.
Sunday Nights at the Siesta Key Drum Circle
If you have not experienced the Siesta Key Drum Circle, put it on your list before summer ends. Every Sunday evening, about an hour before sunset, a spontaneous gathering forms on Siesta Beach, just south of the main pavilion between lifeguard stands 3 and 4. Locals and visitors alike bring drums, hand percussion, and an open heart, and what emerges is a joyful, free-form rhythm session that runs until the last light fades over the Gulf.
The vibe is welcoming and unpolished in the best way. Some people dance in the sand. Others sit in a loose circle playing congas and djembe drums. Kids spin with glow sticks. Couples watch from blankets. It has been a Sunday tradition here for more than 30 years, and it captures the relaxed, creative spirit of island life better than any organized event could.
I like to bring a chair, a takeout dinner from one of the Siesta Key Village restaurants, and let the drumming carry me through the sunset. Siesta Key's quartz sand stays cool underfoot even in August, and the water temperature is bath-warm. Parking at the main lot fills early on Sundays, so plan to arrive at least an hour before sunset if you want a spot. Siesta Key is about 20 minutes from the Palmer Ranch corridor via Stickney Point Road or the Siesta Key Bridge.
Exploring the New Exhibitions at Art Center Sarasota
The Art Center Sarasota (266 South Palm Avenue, downtown) just opened its late summer exhibitions, and I have already visited twice. The centerpiece is "Shaping Sarasota: A Century of Art," a chronological visual history of the area through the eyes of its artists. Walking through the galleries, you see Sarasota evolve from a small Gulf Coast town into the cultural destination it is today, all through paintings, ceramics, mixed media, and photography.
The exhibition runs through September 26, and the center is open Tuesday through Saturday. I love that the Art Center is housed in a mid-century modern building with plenty of natural light, and the staff is always happy to talk about the pieces on display. Admission is modest, and there is free parking on site. It makes for a perfect afternoon outing — spend an hour with the art, then walk over to Main Street for lunch or coffee.
Quiet Evenings on the Legacy Trail
My Chihuahuas and my Doberman have strong opinions about our evening walks, and the Legacy Trail near the Palmer Ranch access points has been our routine all summer. The crushed gravel path winds through shaded stretches of oak canopy, past wetlands and ponds, and the breeze off the preserve makes it noticeably cooler than the surrounding roads.
The trail is popular with cyclists, runners, and walkers, but late evening during the week tends to be quiet. I see egrets wading in the drainage ponds, an occasional gopher tortoise crossing the path, and always a few fellow locals out for their evening constitution. There is something deeply grounding about ending the day on the trail, the sky softening overhead as the last light filters through the trees.
If you are thinking about making a move to the Palmer Ranch area, the Legacy Trail is one of the defining amenities of the corridor. Several communities have direct trail access, and the planned expansion continues to extend the network further south toward Venice.
Rooftop Cocktails and End-of-Summer Dates
The Art Ovation Hotel's rooftop bar in downtown Sarasota remains one of my go-to spots for a late summer evening. The panoramic view of Sarasota Bay and the skyline is unmatched, and the craft cocktail program keeps things interesting. On weekends, the SKYLINE Pool Party series runs Saturday afternoons through September 12, with lounge chairs, pool access, and a lively bar scene that feels like a mini vacation without leaving town.
On Friday, August 28, the hotel is hosting Dueling Pianos at 7 p.m., and Saturday, August 29 brings a Murder Mystery Dinner. Both are ticketed and tend to fill up, so I would book ahead if you are planning an evening out. The hotel is about 15 minutes from Palmer Ranch and offers valet parking.
Looking Ahead to Fall
As August winds down, I start to feel the energy shift toward fall. The Bayfront Farmers Market will stay full through the season change, the Theatre and Opera House seasons ramp up with new productions, and the weather gradually becomes what makes the Gulf Coast famous — sunny, warm, and impossibly comfortable. It is a wonderful time to be exploring neighborhoods and thinking about where you want to settle.
