There is something special about the evening light in August. The sun drops lower in the sky, the heat of the day softens, and the Gulf Coast settles into its most peaceful rhythm. As someone who lives here year-round, I have come to treasure these late summer evenings. The crowds have thinned from the peak season, the restaurants are easier to get into, and the sunsets seem to last forever. Here is how I spend my August evenings around Sarasota.
Rooftop Cocktails at the Art Ovation Hotel
The Art Ovation Hotel (1255 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota) has become one of my go-to spots for an evening out. Their rooftop bar offers a view of the Sarasota skyline that you simply cannot get anywhere else. The open-air deck is comfortable even in August thanks to the evening breeze off the bay, and the cocktail program is thoughtful and creative. The bartenders know their craft, and the seasonal menu changes with the produce.
What makes Art Ovation special is the ever-changing art on display throughout the hotel. The lobby gallery regularly features rotating exhibitions and an active Artist in Residence program. Right now, artist Robyn Holl has been working in the lobby through August 9, and the Pascal Benichou exhibition runs through November. I like to arrive early, wander the gallery, and then head up to the roof as the sun starts to set. The combination of art and a great view makes for a memorable evening, and it is about 15 minutes north of Palmer Ranch up US-41.
Sunset Walk on the Ringling Bridge
One of my simplest and most consistent August rituals is a sunset walk across the Ringling Bridge. The bridge connects downtown Sarasota to St. Armands Key and Lido Key, and the pedestrian path offers a panoramic view of Sarasota Bay. I park at the downtown side near Marina Jacks and walk the full span as the sun drops behind the Gulf.
The bridge gets busy with walkers, runners, and cyclists during the golden hour, and there is a convivial energy to it. People stop to take photos, couples hold hands at the railing, and everyone seems to be in a good mood. It is free, it is accessible, and it is one of the best views on the Gulf Coast. The walk takes about 20 minutes each way, and I usually end up at Marina Jacks for a drink on the patio afterward.
Late Dinner Patios at Marina Jacks
Marina Jacks (2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota) is a classic for a reason. The bayfront location, the working marina, the constant parade of boats coming and going, and the beautiful sunset views make it a staple of Sarasota evening life. In August, the patio is the place to be. The covered outdoor seating has fans that keep things comfortable, and the 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. dinner window means you can watch the entire sunset transition from golden to pink to deep blue over the water.
On Thursday, August 13, Scott Curts performs on the Blue Sunshine Patio from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., adding live music to the setting. The menu features fresh Gulf seafood, steaks, and creative cocktails. I recommend the grouper sandwich or the shrimp and grits. Marina Jacks is about 15 minutes from Palmer Ranch, and the parking garage on Gulf Stream Avenue is a short walk from the restaurant.
St. Armands Circle Evening Stroll
St. Armands Circle is a completely different experience in the late summer evening. The peak season crowds have thinned, the pace is more relaxed, and the outdoor patios at the circle's restaurants are wonderfully comfortable after the sun goes down. I like to park near the circle and wander the boutiques before they close, then settle in for dinner at one of the patio restaurants.
The Circle's landscaping is beautiful in the evening light, with fountains, palm trees, and public art scattered throughout the central park. Live music often spills out of the restaurants, and the whole atmosphere feels like a permanent vacation. It is about 10 minutes from Palmer Ranch via US-41 and the Ringling Bridge, and it is one of those places that reminds me why I chose to live on the Gulf Coast.
A Quiet Evening at Home
Of course, not every evening needs to be an event. One of the joys of living on Palmer Ranch is the quiet community atmosphere. An evening walk on the Legacy Trail as the sun filters through the trees, a swim in the community pool after the heat of the day has passed, or simply sitting on the lanai with a glass of wine and a good book. Some of my best evenings are the ones I spend at home, grateful for the peace and beauty of this place.
If you are thinking about making the Gulf Coast your home, I would love to help you find the right community. Explore the neighborhoods or reach out for a conversation. There is no better time to start planning your own late summer evenings here.
