Here is exactly how I would spend a mid-September weekend down here, and it works whether you are visiting or you already live on the corridor.
Saturday Morning: the Venice Farmers Market
Start at the Venice Farmers Market on the City Hall campus at 401 West Venice Avenue, open from eight to noon. Grab coffee, load up on local produce and cut flowers, and plan a slow breakfast at a sidewalk café along Venice Avenue. For a true local lunch later, Darrell's Restaurant on South Tamiami Trail has been feeding the neighborhood for years, and it is exactly the kind of no-frills spot worth knowing about.
Saturday Afternoon: Shark Teeth at Caspersen
After lunch, point the car toward Caspersen Beach, the Gulf Coast's shark tooth capital. September is the season for it: the water is still bath-warm, the post-Labor Day crowds have thinned, and a patient hour of beachcombing almost always turns up a fossil or two. Saturday Evening: Water, Then a Show
For dinner, the Crow's Nest Restaurant, Tavern and Marina on Tarpon Center Drive is a favorite of mine for a waterfront table, and Dockside Waterfront Grill on North Tamiami Trail is a solid second. Then walk it off on the way to the Pink Floyd Tribute at the Venice Community Center at seven. It is a full live performance, and it makes a fun, easy Saturday night.
Sunday Morning: the Legacy Trail From Palmer Ranch
Sunday, trade the sand for the Palmer Ranch side of things. Start at the Culverhouse Nature Park trailhead, minutes from the southern corridor communities, and take the Legacy Trail north. It runs end to end, about 18.5 miles from Venice through Palmer Ranch into downtown Sarasota, and the fall light through the pines is something else. Rent a bike or bring your own, ride as far as the day allows, and reward yourself with a late breakfast.
Sunday Sunset: Nokomis
End the weekend the way I end most of my favorite ones: at Nokomo's Sunset Hut on South Tamiami Trail in Nokomis for a late-afternoon bite, then walk across to Nokomis Beach for the sunset. It is quieter than the big beach scenes, and that is exactly the point.
