November is the Gulf Coast's shoulder season in the best way: highs in the 70s, Gulf water still warm, and the crowds of the winter season not quite here yet. It is also the month the calendar fills with signature events, from shark-tooth mornings in Venice to the sand sculptors on Siesta Beach. Here is how I would spend it.
Shark-Tooth Mornings at Caspersen Beach
Venice is the self-proclaimed Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and November is prime hunting weather. Caspersen Beach runs about four miles of shoreline, and the trick is low tide: walk the wet sand where the dark shell-and-gravel hash bands sit, and you will find fossilized teeth in every shade from black to honey. A sifting shovel, locals call it the Venice Snow Shovel, from Papa's Bait Shop by the Venice Fishing Pier makes the hunt twice as fast, and collecting is free with no permit. Bring a small jar, and by the second tide you will have a full one.
The Crystal Classic Countdown
The headline event of the month is the Siesta Key Crystal Classic at Siesta Beach, November 13 through 16, where master sand sculptors carve the island's famous quartz sand into towering works over a four-day weekend. Walk the sculpture garden while the artists work, then stay for a sunset that never misses. It is my favorite weekend of the fall to bring out-of-town guests, and the beach itself is quieter in the days before it opens.
The Season's First Full Weekends
The month opens with the Sarasota Medieval Fair at the Woods of Mallaranny in Myakka City, running weekends November 7 through December 6 with jousting, falconry and artisan vendors, and the first weekend is High Seas Weekend. Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, brings the City of Sarasota's parade stepping off at 10 a.m. on Main Street and finishing at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, while Venice holds its ceremony at Patriots Park at 11 a.m. For anglers, November is a strong month: snook season stays open through November 30, redfish and spotted seatrout work the Sarasota Bay grass flats, and Spanish mackerel and pompano show along the beaches.
Put it together and November on the corridor is a loop of low-tide beach mornings, a Medieval Fair day, a parade, and a long weekend on Siesta sand, all within about half an hour of Palmer Ranch. The full calendar with dates and details is in my Community Events guide, and if this season has you thinking about a permanent address, reach out and I will show you the neighborhoods that sit closest to all of it.
