Every October on the Gulf Coast seems to end with a full calendar, and this year is no exception. One of my favorite additions to Halloween weekend is the Sarasota Fine Art Show, which lands right on the bayfront at JD Hamel Park, a short walk from Marina Jacks. Here is how I would spend a free Saturday or Sunday wandering downtown Sarasota while the art comes to the water.
The Sarasota Fine Art Show at JD Hamel Park
On Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., juried artists from across the country set up in JD Hamel Park at 199 Bayfront Drive. You will find original paintings, sculpture, jewelry and photography under the tents, with the blue of Sarasota Bay behind the booths and the downtown Sarasota skyline rising across the water. Admission is free, and the park sits right beside Marina Jacks, so you can do a full bayfront morning: coffee first, a slow lap through the artists, then lunch on the patio with a view of the boats.
I tell friends to go early, before the midday sun gets high, because the light on the bay is at its best in the morning and the park is at its calmest. And because JD Hamel Park is compact, it pairs beautifully with the rest of the day without ever feeling like a chore.
How It Fits Into Halloween Weekend
This one lands on the busiest weekend of the season, so the art show is really one chapter of a bigger plan. Across the bay, the 38th Downtown Venice Art Festival fills West Venice Avenue both days, and Fright Night on St. Armands Circle dresses up the shopping district Saturday evening. Downtown Sarasota keeps its own celebration going as well: the Clasico Day of the Dead and Halloween Block Party takes over Main Street between Pineapple and Palm Avenues over the holiday weekend, with music and costumes running into the night, an easy walk from the bayfront.
If you love a good art weekend, mark the calendar even further ahead: the Sarasota Fall Fine Art Festival returns to the same spot at JD Hamel Park on November 14 and 15. Two free bayfront art weekends in a month and a half is a nice rhythm for anyone building out a collection or just enjoying the scene. My full rundown of the season's festivals lives in my Community Events guide, and my dining guide has the bayfront spots to close out the day.
Halloween weekend is also a wonderful time to see downtown Sarasota at its liveliest, with the season's first crowds arriving and the whole arts district out on the sidewalks. If you are thinking about making the move and want to see the area during one of its most social weekends, reach out and I will build a tour day around everything you loved this weekend.
