September is my favorite month for a downtown evening in Sarasota: the sun sets earlier, the air cools just enough for a rooftop, and the arts calendar comes back to life without the winter crowds. This is the plan I have been giving friends who ask what to do with one perfect night in the city, and it all rides on real, current exhibitions and shows.
Start with Light at Selby Gardens
Begin mid-afternoon at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on the bayfront, where the 46th Annual Juried Photographic Exhibition is on view through September 30. The juried show is always my favorite pick of the season: photographers from all over weigh in on wildflowers, shorelines, and botanicals, and the prints are staged right among the plants themselves. Selby is one of those places where an hour turns into two without you noticing, and the gardens get the low golden light photographers chase.
Wine and Art at the Sarasota Art Museum
From Selby, cross town to the Sarasota Art Museum on South Tamiami Trail for Uncorked on Tuesday, September 15, starting at 5:30 p.m.: a monthly wine-and-art evening with pours, cheese, and time in the current exhibitions, held on the museum's outdoor plaza. It is a low-key, easy way to get into the building, and the museum's fall exhibitions are worth the trip on their own. I will say it plainly: evenings like this are why the phrase "the arts district" actually means something here, and it is a lovely way for out-of-town buyers to test-drive the city's rhythm.
Rooftop Light at the Art Ovation Hotel
End upstairs at the Art Ovation Hotel on North Palm Avenue, whose rooftop bar is one of my favorite closing views in the city, with the bay and downtown lit up below. The hotel keeps live jazz going on Wednesdays and Latin Nights on Thursdays, and the gallery in the lobby changes with resident artists through the year, so there is always something new to look at. Watching the Season Turn From the Water
If you would rather end the evening on saltwater, Marina Jacks on the bayfront runs patio live music most nights, and nothing quite closes a September day like the last of the sun going down over Sarasota Bay from a waterfront table. The same week, keep an eye out for the Echoes of Sarasota history exhibition event at City Hall during Constitution Week, part of the America 250 observances, a chance to see the city's own story told in art, and it is free.
