Spooky Season Along the South Corridor: Lights at Spanish Point, a New Orchid Show & My Fall Evening Plan

October is when the South Corridor really shows off. Between the glowing light path at Historic Spanish Point in Osprey and a brand-new orchid exhibition opening downtown, the next six weeks are stacked with the kind of evenings that make you glad you live here. Here is what I am planning, and how I would spend a fall day on the corridor.

Lights at Spooky Point, Historic Spanish Point (Osprey)

The show I am most excited about is Lights at Spooky Point at Selby Gardens' Historic Spanish Point campus, 401 N. Tamiami Trail in Osprey, running every evening October 1 through 31, typically from about 6:30 to 9 p.m. The campus transforms into Spooky Point with a warmly lit walking path through the gardens, botanical decorations including Dracula, spider and bat orchids, plus playful games and food along the way. It is a wonderfully atmospheric walk for all ages, and since weekend nights sell out, I grab tickets in advance.

The bonus is the location: Historic Spanish Point sits on the bayfront with miles of nature trails and a rich pioneer history, and it is a five-to-ten minute drive from most Palmer Ranch communities. It is the rare event that feels both like a big production and like your own neighborhood's backyard.

The Orchid Show Opens October 10

Downtown, Selby Gardens opens Orchid Show 2026 on Saturday, October 10, running through December 6 at the bayfront campus on Mound Street. Contemporary artist Christian Sampson has created site-specific works for the Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum of Botany & the Arts, many inspired by the gardens' globally admired orchid collection. The bayfront campus is one of the most beautiful settings in downtown Sarasota, and the show adds a fresh reason to wander through the greenhouses and sculpture gardens on a warm afternoon.

My Fall Evening Plan on the Corridor

A full day on the corridor could look like this: an early dinner in Osprey at the new Five Nine Grill & Tavern, then the light path at Spooky Point as the sky goes dark. Or save the spooky night for a weekend and spend a Saturday at downtown Selby taking in the Orchid Show, followed by rooftop drinks at the Art Ovation Hotel and a slow walk along the bayfront.

One courtesy to keep in mind: sea turtle nesting runs through October 31 in Sarasota County, so once the sun is down on the beach, lights stay off and dune crossings are marked and respected. It is a small habit that keeps the hatchlings safe and the beaches wild.

October is the locals' season, and it is also the best month of the year to tour the corridor, with model homes open every day and the full fall calendar as the after-hours plan. If you would like to see the communities that sit between the Spanish Point campus and downtown, let's make a plan. I would love to show you around.
