There's a particular energy that settles over the Gulf Coast in mid-July. The tourist flow has softened, the locals have their routines locked in, and the event calendar feels like it was curated just for the people who actually live here. This week is a great example — free beach runs for kids, a holiday-themed craft show, the weekly farmers market that anchors every Saturday morning, and the Ringling Circus doing what it does best. Here's what's on my radar for July 14–20.
Kids Summer Beach Runs — Tuesday & Wednesday
One of my favorite free summer programs is the Kids Summer Beach Runs, and they're happening again this week at two of the Gulf Coast's best beaches:
- Tuesday, July 14 at 5:00 PM — Siesta Beach. The world-famous quartz sand is the perfect surface for little runners — it stays cool even in July, and the flat, wide beach gives them plenty of room to spread out.
- Wednesday, July 15 at 5:00 PM — Brohard Beach in Venice. This is also where the Venice dog beach is located, so if you've got a pup, you can make a double outing of it.
These runs are free, no registration required, and they start at 5:00 PM — timed perfectly to catch the golden hour light and avoid the worst of the midday heat. If you're visiting the area with kids or grandkids, these are the kind of simple, memorable moments that define summer on the Gulf Coast.
Christmas in July Arts & Crafts Show — Saturday, July 18
The Christmas in July Arts & Crafts Show at Urfer Family Park (4000 Honore Avenue) runs Saturday from 10:00 AM onward, and it's free to attend. This one's a community favorite — local artisans, handmade gifts, holiday-themed crafts, and that festive atmosphere that makes it feel like the holiday season arrived a few months early.
Urfer Family Park is right off Honore Avenue, just north of the Palmer Ranch corridor, making it an easy Saturday morning stop. Grab a coffee, browse the booths, and enjoy the park's green space and playground while you're there. It's the kind of local event that doesn't make the tourist brochures but absolutely makes living here special.
Sarasota Farmers Market — Saturday, July 18
The Sarasota Farmers Market runs every Saturday, 7:00 AM–1:00 PM on Main Street and Lemon Avenue in downtown Sarasota. Eighty-plus vendors, live acoustic music, and summer produce at its peak. Right now the mangoes, tropical flowers, and local honey are standouts — and the prepared food vendors keep getting better every week.
- Sarasota Farmers Market — Saturday, 7 AM–1 PM, Main St & Lemon Ave. The big one — plan to spend at least an hour.
- Venice Farmers Market — Saturday, 8 AM–Noon, 401 W. Venice Avenue at City Hall. Smaller, more relaxed, perfect if you're heading south.

- Ringling Summer Circus Spectacular — Through August 8 at the Historic Asolo Theater. World-class aerial artistry and circus performers. Showtimes: Tue–Fri 11 AM & 2 PM, Sat 2 PM & 5 PM. A Sarasota summer tradition that never gets old.
- "Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith" — On view at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens through September 13. A stunning photographic exhibition set among the tropical gardens — indoor and outdoor installations that blend art with the landscape.
- Free Fitness at The Bay — Namaste Yoga (Thu 6 PM, Sat 8 AM), Mat Pilates (Mon 5:30 & 6:30 PM; Tue & Thu 7:30 AM), Bootcamp (Tue 6 PM), and Tai Chi (Wed 8 AM). All free on the Sarasota waterfront. Check The Bay's calendar for registration.
- Jazz Jam SRQ — At Selby Library, recurring through August 17. A free, jam-session-style jazz gathering that brings local musicians together.
- "Marvin: A Marvin Gaye Revue" — Wednesday, July 15 at 7:30 PM, The Donelly Theatre, 1012 N. Orange Avenue. A soul-music tribute performance downtown.
Looking Ahead: World Cup Final Watch Party — July 19
The FIFA World Cup Championship Final is Sunday, July 19 at 3:00 PM at The Bay waterfront park. Free large-screen broadcast, food trucks, and community energy on the bayfront lawn. Whether you're a die-hard soccer fan or just looking for a fun Sunday afternoon, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest community gatherings of the summer.
Why Mid-July Is Secretly the Best Time
When I first moved from Michigan to Palmer Ranch, I assumed the summer months would be quiet — too hot, too slow, not much happening. What I discovered is that mid-July is when the Gulf Coast really belongs to the locals. The free beach runs, the farmers market at its peak, craft shows in neighborhood parks, circus performances at the Ringling — these aren't special-occasion events. They're just how summer works here.
