The tourist crowds have pulled back, the locals reclaim their favorite spots, and the event calendar keeps delivering — just with a little more breathing room. This week is a perfect example: a quirky holiday-themed shopping event in Venice, free wellness classes right on the Sarasota bayfront, and the weekly farmers market that never disappoints. Christmas in July on Venice Avenue — July 10–11
If you've never experienced Venice MainStreet's Christmas in July, you're missing one of the most delightful small-town events on the Gulf Coast. This Friday and Saturday, downtown Venice transforms into a holiday scene — Santa shows up (in shorts, naturally), storefronts go all out with window displays, and the whole Venice Avenue corridor takes on a festive, playful energy.
Here's what's happening:
- Saturday, July 11: The Farmers Market at 401 W. Venice Avenue (9–10 a.m.) kicks things off — shop local and meet Santa before the main festivities begin.
- Fire Station Photo Op: Next to City Hall at 112 S. Harbor Drive, 10–11 a.m. Saturday. A fun stop for anyone with kids — or just an excuse to snap a photo with a real fire truck.
- Lunch with Santa: At Seed and Bean Market, 116 W. Venice Avenue, at noon on Saturday. One of my favorite casual spots on the avenue — great sandwiches and a laid-back vibe.
- Elf Scavenger Hunt: Find the naughty and nice elves hidden around downtown stores. Pick up hints at the Centennial Park Kiosk.
- Ornament Making: Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at The Venice Theatre. A hands-on craft activity that's open to everyone.
- Trolley Rides: Complimentary trolley rides through the downtown district, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. both days.
Venice Avenue itself is worth the trip even without the event — the independent shops, cafés, and that distinctive small-town Florida character make it one of the most walkable corridors in the region. But Christmas in July adds an extra layer of charm that's hard to resist.
Free Fitness at The Bay — All Week
One of the best-kept secrets in Sarasota right now is the free outdoor fitness programming at The Bay waterfront park. These aren't casual one-off classes — they're weekly, instructor-led sessions that run all summer long, and they're completely free.
- Namaste at The Bay Yoga — Thursday, July 9, 6:00 p.m. on the waterfront lawn. A one-hour flow class with views of Sarasota Bay. Bring your own mat.
- Mat Pilates at The Bay — Monday evenings, 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sessions run through August 31. Core-focused, all levels welcome.
- Tai Chi Qigong — Wednesday, July 8, 8:00 a.m. A gentle, meditative practice right on the water. Perfect for morning people.
- Bootcamp — Tuesdays and Saturdays. Higher energy, full-body workout on the lawn.

- Sarasota Farmers Market — Saturday, July 11, 7 a.m.–1 p.m., Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Eighty-plus vendors, live acoustic music, and summer produce at its peak. Right now the mangoes, tropical flowers, and local honey are standouts.
- Siesta Key Farmers Market — Sunday, July 12, 8 a.m.–12 p.m., Siesta Key Village. Smaller, more relaxed, and the perfect excuse to pair it with a morning walk on Siesta Beach. Even in July, that quartz sand stays remarkably cool underfoot.
- Venice Farmers Market — Saturday, July 11, 8 a.m.–1 p.m., 401 W. Venice Avenue at City Hall. This one doubles as the Christmas in July kickoff — Santa will be there.
