The festival tents grab the headlines this weekend, but the music and arts calendar is just as full, and it is all within an easy drive of the Palmer Ranch corridor. If you want the evenings to feel as good as the daytime, here is the honest guide to the music and arts side of the week of October 12 through 18, the way I would plan it for friends in town.
Friday Night: Candlelight in the Sanctuary
My favorite way to open the weekend is the Candlelight concert series at St. Boniface Episcopal Church on Friday the 16th. The candlelit setting is genuinely beautiful, and the two programs that night could not be more different: a Coldplay and Imagine Dragons tribute and a Vivaldi evening, both performed live in the glow of hundreds of candles. It is intimate, it is unhurried, and it is the kind of thing that makes a cool October night feel like a real occasion. Tickets sell through the series, so grab them early.
The Saturday Music Marathon
Saturday the 17th is a full day. If you are a jazz fan, Take 6 brings their Saturday Night Jazz show to The Venue at LEC on 17th Street at 7 p.m., a cappella legends who have been filling rooms for decades. Over at the Van Wezel, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac takes the stage at 7:30 with the full classic rock set, the perfect cap to a day of festivals downtown. And if you need a laugh in between, Nick Hoff is on at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre Thursday through Saturday, a reliable mid-weekend reset.
The daytime belongs to the festivals, and I walk through them in my weekend festival guide, but the through-line is this: hit the craft festival at Five Points Park in the morning, catch the jazz or the Fleetwood Mac tribute in the evening, and you have one of those days that makes me grateful to live here.
Sunday: ABBA, a Matinee & a Slow Close
Sunday keeps the momentum going. The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA plays the Van Wezel at 7 p.m., an upbeat close to the weekend. If you would rather keep it light, Pinocchio runs its final weekend at Florida Studio Theatre through the 18th, a family-friendly matinee that pairs well with an early dinner on the bayfront. And the Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market runs Saturday morning on Lemon Avenue as always, so you can stock the kitchen before the music starts.
The full season's lineup, with dates and details, lives in my Community Events guide, and I update the homepage calendar every week. If you are visiting to research a move, this is the week to see the arts district at its liveliest. Reach out and I will build the itinerary around your list.
