We're moving into the final stretch of July, and the Gulf Coast is serving up a fantastic lineup of performances, competitions, and community gatherings. Here's what I'm excited about between now and the first weekend of August.
"The Last Romance" Opens at Florida Studio Theatre
Florida Studio Theatre in downtown Sarasota is opening a new production this week. "The Last Romance" runs from July 22 through August 16 in the Gompertz Theatre. This is a heartwarming play by Joe DiPietro about unexpected love and second chances at a later stage of life — the kind of story that resonates deeply in a community like ours, where so many residents have started fresh chapters on the Gulf Coast.
FST's summer programming is always thoughtfully curated, and "The Last Romance" has been getting strong early buzz. The Gompertz Theatre is an intimate space on the corner of Palm Avenue and First Street, less than 20 minutes from Palmer Ranch. If you've never been to an FST production, this is a great one to start with — the theatre has a full bar and a relaxed summer vibe that makes for a lovely evening out. Pair it with dinner on Main Street afterward and you've got a perfect date night.
Laser Light Nights Return to The Bishop
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature on the Bradenton Riverwalk is bringing back Laser Light Nights from July 30 through August 1, with shows Thursday through Saturday evenings. This is the immersive laser and light show inside the museum's planetarium dome, set to music. They run multiple shows each night with different musical themes — classic rock, pop, and family-friendly options.
If you haven't experienced Laser Light Nights yet, it's worth the short drive north. The Bishop is about 25 minutes from Palmer Ranch, and the Bradenton Riverwalk area makes for a nice afternoon or evening outing. Arrive early to walk the Riverwalk, grab dinner at one of the waterfront spots, then catch a laser show under the dome. Shows run through the summer on select weekends, and tickets sell well so it's worth checking availability in advance.
Florida State DanceSport Championships
The Florida State DanceSport Championships return to the area from July 29 through August 2. This is a major competitive ballroom dance event that draws dancers and competitors from across the Southeast. The competition features everything from standard waltz to Latin rhythms, with amateur and professional divisions running throughout the long weekend.
The event is held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, about 20 minutes north of Palmer Ranch on 41. It's fascinating to watch — the costumes, the precision, the athleticism of competitive ballroom dance. Even if you've never followed dance sport, it's a spectacle. The Saturday evening sessions tend to be the most exciting, with the top-level competitors performing their championship routines. Tickets are available at the door or online.
A Taste of the Ranch at Waterside Place
Through August 1, Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch is hosting A Taste of the Ranch, a culinary event series featuring tasting menus and special offerings from the restaurants at Waterside Place. Participating spots include BoatHouse Waterfront Dining, Eddie V's, and several other Waterside eateries. It's a great way to sample the dining scene without committing to a full meal at any one place.
Waterside Place is about 15 minutes from Palmer Ranch up University Parkway, and the evening atmosphere there is consistently lovely — fountain-lit plaza, live music on weekends, and plenty of seating. This is one of those events that reminds me why I love living in this area. The community dining scene keeps getting better.
Saturday Sarasota Farmers Market
The Sarasota Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Summer is the absolute best time to visit — the crowds are manageable, the produce is coming in at its seasonal peak, and the vendors have time to chat. I've been loading up on local corn, tomatoes, peaches, and fresh-cut flowers each week, and the quality has been exceptional.
If you're new to the area or just visiting, the farmers market is my number one recommendation for getting a feel for the community. Grab a coffee, walk the full stretch of vendors, and then wander over to the bayfront park. It's the kind of Saturday morning ritual that makes living here special.
