This Week on the Gulf Coast: Opera House Food & Wine, a Venice Beach Send-Off & a Piano Concert on the Sand

It is the last full week of September, and the Gulf Coast is starting to feel like the place everyone is about to discover. The heat has loosened its grip, the evenings come a little earlier, and the calendar suddenly has a lot to say. Here is how I would spend the next seven days, from the Opera House in downtown Sarasota to the sand at Siesta Beach.

Saturday Is the Big One

Start with the Sarasota Opera Food & Wine Festival on Saturday, September 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. (VIP entry at 12:30), inside the historic Sarasota Opera House at 61 North Pineapple Avenue. Food samples from a wide range of area kitchens plus wine tastings fill the grand hall, and the proceeds support the Sarasota Youth Opera. It is one of those events that feels like a party and a cause at the same time. For anyone curious about the neighborhoods that put you minutes from the arts district, the downtown Sarasota guide is a good place to start.

If your Saturday leans beachy instead, the Venice Beach Party at 101 The Esplanade runs 1 to 6 p.m. with live music, food trucks, beer and wine on the sand, and a free trolley shuttling from Centennial Park so parking stays painless. It is Venice's way of saying goodbye to summer, and it does not get much more on-theme than that. The Venice neighborhoods page can show you how close this all sits to everyday life.

Also Saturday morning, the CocoRootz Fall Fruit Festival at 1822 North Orange Avenue kicks off at 11 a.m., a free community day celebrating the harvest season with fruit, music and the kind of easygoing lawn energy that marks the change of seasons here.

Friday Night in Venice, Sunday Night on the Key

The Venice Friday Night Concert Series returns to the Centennial Park gazebo on Friday, September 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., free and open to everyone. Bring a lawn chair, grab takeout from a West Venice Avenue spot, and let the music run into the warm evening light. It is the most quintessential Venice evening there is.

On Sunday, September 27, the Siesta Key Drum Circle gathers on the sand at Siesta Beach about an hour before sunset, free and open to all. Drums, dancers and newcomers with no rhythm at all, all welcome. It is the island's longest-running evening ritual, and it is exactly as magical as people say. Spend a bit of time on the Siesta Key page to see what island living looks like the other six days of the week.

A Concert With Headphones at the Water's Edge

Then comes a weeknight I am genuinely excited about. Monday, September 28, at 6 p.m., MindTravel: Live-to-Headphones Silent Piano Concert takes over Siesta Beach at 948 Beach Road, free to attend. You sit on the sand with your own wireless headphones, and the piano comes directly into your ears as the sun goes down over the Gulf. Bring a chair or a blanket and give yourself a full 90 minutes of stillness. It is the most peaceful thing on the calendar all month.

Also Worth Knowing

The Modern Works Festival at Urbanite Theatre closes its run this weekend, Legacy: Motown and More! continues at Florida Studio Theatre through October 4, and Marina Jacks keeps live music going on the bayfront patio most nights, with free jazz at the Art Ovation Hotel on Wednesday and Latin nights on Thursday. Both farmers markets run Saturday morning as always, downtown Sarasota on Lemon Avenue and the Venice Farmers Market at City Hall.

If a week like this has you wondering what it would be like to live here year-round, let’s talk. I would love to help you find your spot on the Gulf Coast before the season really takes off.
