The first full week after Labor Day is one of my favorite stretches of the whole Gulf Coast year. The summer crowds thin out, the evenings turn soft, and the fall performance season starts waking up across Sarasota and Venice. This week there is a wonderful mix of orchestral music, a free concert in a historic downtown gazebo, and a big-name comedian, all within an easy drive of Palmer Ranch. Here is what is on my calendar.
Sarasota Orchestra Opens the Season at the Van Wezel
On Thursday, September 10, at 7 p.m., Sarasota Orchestra presents Summon the Heroes at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on North Tamiami Trail, co-presented with the hall itself. It is an opening-night program built around heroic, cinematic repertoire, and the Bayfront setting makes for a lovely evening: grab dinner downtown first, then walk over as the sun drops over Sarasota Bay. Tickets are available through the Van Wezel box office, and I always recommend arriving a little early to settle in and enjoy the bayfront before the downbeat.
While you are downtown, note that the hall's 2026-27 single tickets go on sale Saturday, September 12. If you have been waiting to lock in your winter season, that is the morning to do it. The Sarasota arts calendar is a real anchor of the winter season, and this lineup is a strong one.
Generation Gap Takes the Centennial Park Gazebo in Venice
On Friday, September 11, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Venice Friday Night Concert Series returns to the Centennial Park gazebo on West Venice Avenue with the Generation Gap, an oldies review that plays straight through the fifties, sixties, and seventies. It is free, it is outdoors, and it is exactly the kind of unhurried evening that makes downtown Venice feel so welcoming.
Bring a folding chair or a blanket, pick up dinner from one of the sidewalk cafes on Venice Avenue beforehand, and wander over when the first notes start. Cassariano Italian Eatery and Darwin's on 4th are my usual pre-concert stops in that part of town. Afterward, take the short stroll toward the Venice Pier while the lights come up along the water.
Ron White at the Van Wezel
For a very different kind of night, Ron White brings his stand-up to the Van Wezel on Sunday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. It is an 18-plus show, so it is a fun one to plan as a grown-ups' night out. Dinner at a bayfront restaurant before the show, a few laughs, and a short drive home to the Palmer Ranch corridor.
The Rest of the Week
The recurring favorites hold steady, too. Songbirds of the Seventies continues at Florida Studio Theatre in the Goldstein Cabaret through September 20, celebrating Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Janis Joplin, and Linda Ronstadt. The Venice Farmers Market sets up every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at the City Hall campus on West Venice Avenue.
Looking ahead a little, the Venice Art & Craft Festival lands downtown on September 19, the St. Armands Circle Art Festival returns September 19 and 20, and the Sarasota Opera Food & Wine Festival takes over on September 26. Then Fresh Fridays Downtown kicks off its new season on Friday, October 2, on Main Street.
