Songbirds of the Seventies at Florida Studio Theatre
Florida Studio Theatre on Palm Avenue just opened "Songbirds of the Seventies", a new cabaret-style production that runs from July 24 through September 6. This is a polished, heartfelt tribute to the great female singer-songwriters of the 1970s — think Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, and more. The show is in the Goldstein Cabaret space, which is intimate and relaxed, with table seating and a full bar.
I caught an early preview and can tell you it's the kind of show that leaves you humming all the way home. Head Over Heels at Venice Theatre
South of Sarasota, Venice Theatre is opening "Head Over Heels" on July 24, running through August 8. This is a high-energy musical comedy set to the music of the Go-Go's — think "We Got the Beat," "Our Lips Are Sealed," and "Vacation" woven into a fun, fast-paced story based on Sir Philip Sidney's "The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia." It's joyful, colorful, and exactly the kind of summer show that lifts your spirits.
Venice Theatre is about 20 minutes south of Palmer Ranch on US-41, right in the heart of historic downtown Venice. The theatre itself is a community gem — the largest volunteer-powered theatre in the country, with a loyal following and consistently strong productions. The area around the theatre on Venice Avenue is lovely for a pre-show stroll, with brick-lined streets, boutique shops, and outdoor dining. I like grabbing a casual dinner at Cassariano Italian Eatery or Tony's Pizzeria before a show. If you haven't explored Venice's downtown yet, this is a great excuse.
Restore by the Shore: Free Yoga on Sunday
This Sunday, July 26, Restore by the Shore is happening at 400 Benjamin Franklin Drive on Lido Key. This is a free outdoor yoga and wellness event right by the beach, open to all levels. It starts in the late morning and includes guided yoga, meditation, and time to connect with the coastal environment. Bring a mat, some water, and arrive early to find parking.

For art lovers, Abstract Horizons opens July 24 at Milan Art Gallery on South Palm Avenue downtown. The Sarasota Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 7 AM to 1 PM on Main Street and Lemon Avenue. The crowds are manageable in July, the vendors are generous with samples, and there's live acoustic music to enjoy while you shop. It's one of those Saturday morning rituals that defines life on the coast.
