Spirit of '76 Block Party — Friday, July 3
The city of Sarasota is throwing a Spirit of '76 block party at Selby Five Points Park on Friday, July 3 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Expect live music, local vendors, and an interactive projection mapping art installation called "Light Up the Sky" that transforms the space after dark. It's free, it's downtown, and it's the kind of event that captures Sarasota's creative energy better than almost anything else on the calendar this summer.
If you're coming from Palmer Ranch, it's about a 20-minute drive north on Tamiami Trail. I'd recommend arriving early and grabbing dinner on Main Street before the party kicks off — there are plenty of options within a few blocks.
Fourth of July Fireworks — Three Great Options
Bayfront Park, Downtown Sarasota
The city's official Fourth of July fireworks launch from Bayfront Park at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. The park stretches along Sarasota Bay, so you get the full effect — fireworks bursting over calm water with the downtown skyline behind you. Arrive by early evening if you want a good spot on the grass. The Gator Club is also hosting a block party on Lemon Avenue that afternoon.
Siesta Key Beach
The Siesta Key Community Fireworks show launches right from Siesta Beach — and yes, it's as magical as it sounds. The Siesta Key Fourth of July parade through the Village kicks things off earlier in the day with golf carts decked out in red, white, and blue. North Brohard Beach, Venice
Venice is celebrating its Centennial this year, and the Independence Day festivities are bigger than usual. The Venice Centennial Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on July 4 at the intersection of W. Venice Avenue and Ave des Parques, followed by a picnic and fireworks at North Brohard Beach at 9:00 p.m. It's a wonderful small-town celebration with all the charm Venice is known for.
Saturday Sarasota Farmers Market
The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. along N. Lemon Avenue. Even on a holiday weekend, this market is buzzing — and it's one of my favorite Saturday morning rituals. Fresh local produce, artisan bread, handmade soaps, live music, and some of the best food truck options in town. Stop by early for the best selection and beat the midday heat.
Venice Farmers Market & Christmas in July
The Venice Farmers Market takes place every Saturday at 401 W. Venice Avenue (at City Hall) from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. And here's a fun one: Venice is hosting "Christmas in July" shopping and dining promotions on July 10–11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — a quirky local tradition that brings some holiday cheer to the middle of summer.
Live Theater & Summer Shows
If you want to escape the afternoon heat and catch something special, Florida Studio Theatre has several shows running. "Dog Mom" — a comedy by Tate Elizabeth Hanyok — is playing in the Keating Theatre through July 26. And if you enjoy live music, "Leaving on a Jet Plane: A Folk Journey" runs in the Goldstein Cabaret through July 12, with "From Woodstock to Soft Rock" opening in the Court Cabaret on July 7.
The Ringling Museum's Summer Circus Spectacular continues through August 8 at the Historic Asolo Theater — a Sarasota tradition featuring world-class aerial artistry and circus performers. They've also added a free "Open Studio" program running through July 22, perfect for a creative afternoon.
