We have a fantastic first weekend of August ahead of us on the Gulf Coast. Between TikiFest at Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda, the Celtic Summer Jam on Anna Maria Island, the final stretch of the Ringling Summer Circus Spectacular, and the Discover Warm Mineral Springs Park Day in North Port, there is something for everyone this weekend. Here is my full guide to what is happening and why you should get out there.
TikiFest at Fishermen's Village
The 10th Annual TikiFest takes over Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda on Saturday, August 1, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is a free, family-friendly celebration of island culture that spans the entire waterfront promenade and dry beach area. Admission and parking are both free.
Expect authentic island music and dance performances. Hawaiian dance, steel drums, and live demonstrations where audience participation is enthusiastically encouraged. There will be vendors offering island-themed art, products, and activities, plus food available from both festival vendors and Fishermen's Village restaurants. The waterfront setting is gorgeous, with boats bobbing in the marina and the Peace River stretching out behind the village. It is about 40 minutes south of Palmer Ranch down I-75, but the drive is easy and the destination is absolutely worth it. If you have never been to Fishermen's Village, this is a wonderful excuse to discover it.
Celtic Summer Jam on Anna Maria Island
If island music of a different flavor is more your style, the Celtic Summer Jam is happening on Saturday, August 1, from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Freckled Fin Irish Pub on Anna Maria Island (5337 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach). Admission is free, and the music runs all day.
Sponsored by the New World Celts (Sarasota Chapter), this year's lineup includes Drunken Shrubbery, Clovers Revenge, and Black Thorne Brigade. These three bands bring energy, humor, and incredible musicianship to the Celtic music scene. There will also be whiskey tastings and raffles throughout the day. The Freckled Fin is a beloved Anna Maria Island spot right near the beach, so you can make a full day of it: morning on the sand, afternoon of live Irish music, and sunset over the Gulf. It is about 30 minutes from Palmer Ranch via I-75 and Cortez Road.
Ringling Summer Circus Spectacular: Final Two Weeks
The Summer Circus Spectacular at The Ringling is in its final two weeks, wrapping up on Saturday, August 8. Presented by the Circus Arts Conservatory in the beautiful Historic Asolo Theater, this show features world-class circus performers: aerialists, jugglers, acrobats, and more. Showtimes are Tuesday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with Saturday shows at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. That is an incredible value for professional circus arts in such an intimate venue. If you have been meaning to catch it, this is your last chance until next summer. The Historic Asolo Theater is a jewel of a space, and the summer circus has become a beloved annual tradition on the Gulf Coast. While you are on the grounds, the Ringling Museum and bayfront gardens are always worth exploring.
Discover Warm Mineral Springs Park Day
On Saturday, August 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Discover Warm Mineral Springs Park Day offers a perfect opportunity to experience one of Southwest Florida's most unique natural attractions. Located at 12200 San Servando Avenue in North Port, about 15 minutes east of Palmer Ranch down Center Road, the park is home to Florida's only natural warm spring. This 200-foot-deep sinkhole flows at a constant 87 degrees year-round.
City of North Port residents get free admission with proof of residency. Non-resident fees are $15 for students ages 6-17 and $20 for adults. The mineral-rich waters have drawn visitors for centuries, and the park itself is a peaceful natural setting with walking paths, picnic areas, and the famous spring-fed swimming area. It is a wonderful late-summer outing, and the warm mineral water is said to have therapeutic benefits.
Saturday Sarasota Farmers Market
The Sarasota Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Late summer brings an incredible bounty: local sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, mangoes, figs, and fresh herbs are all at their peak. The summer market has a wonderfully relaxed pace with smaller crowds than the winter season, and the live acoustic music makes it a lovely start to any Saturday.
