After the festival weekend, the Gulf Coast calendar turns theatrical. The week of October 19 through 25 is when costume season officially begins: the Venice Witches Walk dresses up downtown on Friday, St. Armands hosts its second autumn art weekend on Saturday, and Dracula takes its final bows at The Players. Everything below is within a comfortable drive of the Palmer Ranch corridor, and I have done the planning for you.
Friday: A Full Venice Evening
Start in downtown Venice on Friday, October 23. The Venice MainStreet Witches Walk runs from 5 to 7 p.m. along Miami, Tampa and West Venice Avenues, a costumed stroll through the historic shops and sidewalks, and it is the kind of event where the storefronts get fully in on the theme. It is billed as one for the grown-ups, so it stays playful without turning into a full Halloween night.
When the walk winds down, the Venice Friday Night Concert Series takes over the gazebo at Centennial Park on West Venice Avenue with Nick Fiasco from 7 to 9 p.m. Grab takeout from a Venice Avenue spot, bring a lawn chair, and let the live music run into the evening. Two free events, one easy night.
Saturday: Art on the Circle, Market Mornings & a Day of Service
Saturday the 24th splits three ways, and you can honestly do all of them. The St. Armands Circle Fall Art & Craft Show lines the Circle from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a day-long show across the street-level shops with the boutiques and sidewalk cafes right there for a long, unhurried lap. It is a lighter, more browsable cousin of the big festival weekends, and the beach is a five-minute walk away for a midday reset.
Back in Venice, the Venice Farmers Market is running its fall-winter hours now, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City Hall campus on West Venice Avenue, with local growers, bakers and seafood vendors setting up for the season. And if you want to start the day giving back, Make a Difference Day sends neighbors out across the city on Saturday morning for park cleanups and service projects, a genuinely good way to meet people if you are new to the area.
Sunday: Dracula's Final Curtain
The Players closes Dracula in the intimate Studio Black Box at 1400 Boulevard of the Arts on Sunday, October 25. It has been the gothic anchor of the October theater calendar since it opened on the 3rd, and the small room makes the whole thing feel closer and creepier than any big-stage production could. Tickets are $30, with $15 student pricing, and the run ends this weekend, so it is now or never.
The Week That Follows
Halloween weekend is already stacking up: Fright Night on St. Armands Circle and the Downtown Halloween Strut in Venice both land on Saturday the 31st, and the 38th Annual Downtown Venice Art Festival takes over West Venice Avenue the same weekend. The Siesta Key Crystal Classic sand sculpting festival follows November 13 through 16. The full season's lineup lives in my Community Events guide, and I update the homepage calendar every week.
If you are researching a move, this is a wonderful week to see downtown Sarasota and Venice at their most social, then tour the communities in the daylight hours between events. Reach out and I will build the weekend around your list.
