Late August on the Gulf Coast has a rhythm all its own. The sunsets keep stretching longer, the farmers market crowds are pleasantly light, and the events calendar still delivers plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy the community. Here is what I have my eye on this week and into the weekend.
Art Center Sarasota: "Shaping Sarasota" Exhibition Opens August 20
The Art Center Sarasota on Palm Avenue is opening a new exhibition on Thursday, August 20, and I am genuinely excited about this one. Titled "Shaping Sarasota: A Century of Art," the show presents a chronological visual history spanning 100 years of Sarasota art, from the early days of the Ringling era through the contemporary artists shaping the scene today.
The opening night reception runs from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday and is free to the public. You will find ceramic works by Molly Duff-Clarke, mixed media pieces by Antoine Williams, and juried works from the "Icons" show all on display. The exhibition runs through September 26, so there is plenty of time to visit if you cannot make opening night.
Art Center Sarasota is at 266 South Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota, about a 15-minute drive from the Palmer Ranch corridor. I find these shows are a wonderful window into how our community sees itself, and this one especially so with its century-spanning perspective.
Bachatango Fusion Weekender: August 21-23
For something completely different, the Bachatango Fusion Weekender is happening Friday through Sunday, August 21-23, at Selby Five in downtown Sarasota. This event brings together dance and music enthusiasts for a weekend of bachata and tango fusion workshops, social dancing, and live performances. Whether you are an experienced dancer or just curious to watch, the energy at these gatherings is infectious.
Located in the Selby Five arts district, the venue puts you right in the middle of downtown Sarasota's creative corridor. It runs Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, and tickets are available through the event organizers online. Pair a dance session with dinner at one of the nearby Main Street restaurants, and you have a full evening out on the town.
Live Music and Comedy Across the Corridor
The music scene is in full swing this week. The Chris Anderson Band plays Encore Live on Lockwood Ridge Road this Saturday, August 22, at 7 PM. Their blend of rock, country, and roots music fills the indoor-outdoor space with a lively, comfortable atmosphere that works for a date night or a group outing.
Over at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre on Ringling Boulevard, Kevin McCaffrey brings his stand-up act on Wednesday and Thursday, August 19-20, with shows at 7 PM. There is something about summer comedy shows in an air-conditioned theater that just hits right. McCurdy's is a Sarasota institution, and their calendar stays full year-round.
And for the classical music lovers among you, the Sarasota Piano Trio performs as part of the Midsummer Night Music Festival on Wednesday, August 26, at 7 PM at 40 North Adams Drive. An evening of chamber music in an intimate setting is a wonderful way to wind down the summer.
Saturday Farmers Market and Ongoing Favorites
The Sarasota Farmers Market on Main Street and Lemon Avenue continues every Saturday from 7 AM to 1 PM, rain or shine. More than 70 vendors bring summer produce at its peak, including sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, fresh peaches, and local honey. The crowd is lighter than winter, which means you can take your time browsing. I usually grab a cold brew from one of the coffee vendors and walk the full length before circling back for produce.
The SKYLINE Pool Parties at the Art Ovation Hotel continue on Saturday afternoons through September 12, with rooftop views of the Sarasota skyline and Sarasota Bay. And over at the Sarasota Opera House, The Tales of Hoffmann screens in HD on Sunday, August 23, at 1:30 PM — a lovely way to spend a quiet summer afternoon in one of the most beautiful venues in the city.
A Note on Late August Community Life
One of the things I love most about late August on the Gulf Coast is how the pace shifts. The summer crowds are winding down, but there is still a full calendar of things to do.
