There is something about late August on the Gulf Coast that feels different than the rest of summer. The crowds thin just a little more, the sunsets start arriving a few minutes earlier, and the events calendar shifts into a sweet spot between summer's laid-back rhythm and fall's bustling energy. Here is what I have been looking forward to this week.
Art Center Sarasota: New Exhibition Opening August 20
One of my favorite things about living in Sarasota is how the arts scene stays active even through the summer. The Art Center Sarasota on Palm Avenue opens a new exhibition on Thursday, August 20 with an Opening Night Reception from 5 to 7 PM. The show features ceramic works by Molly Duff-Clarke, and it runs through September 26. I have been watching the gallery's summer programming for years, and this promises to be a highlight of the late summer season.
The reception at 266 South Palm Avenue is free and open to the public. If you have not been to the Art Center before, it is one of those understated Sarasota gems that rewards a visit during any season. Parking is easy on Palm Avenue in the evening, and afterward you are just a few blocks from Main Street's restaurants if you want to make a night of it.
Sarasota Opera House: The Tales of Hoffmann in HD
The Sarasota Opera House continues its summer HD screening series with Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann on Sunday, August 23 at 1:30 PM. There is something special about experiencing opera in that historic Pineapple Avenue theater even when it is a filmed production. The acoustics are superb, and the experience of sitting in those red velvet seats under the ornate ceiling is worth the trip alone.
Tickets are available through the Opera House box office. I would suggest arriving a little early to walk the grounds and enjoy the courtyard. The afternoon show means you will be out by late afternoon with the whole evening ahead of you. Perfect timing for a sunset walk or an early dinner downtown.
Chris Anderson Band at Encore Live
If live music is more your speed, the Chris Anderson Band plays at Encore Live on Saturday, August 22 at 7 PM. Encore Live at 8341 Lockwood Ridge Road has become one of my go-to recommendations for a night out on the south Sarasota side. The venue has a comfortable indoor-outdoor setup with a full bar and a stage that draws talented regional acts.
Chris Anderson brings a blend of rock, country, and roots music that works perfectly for a Saturday evening out. The crowd tends to be a mix of locals who have known about this spot for years and newcomers discovering it. If you are coming from the Palmer Ranch corridor, it is a quick 15-minute drive up Beneva Road.
Carlos Mencia at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre
Looking ahead, McCurdy's Comedy Theatre on Ringling Boulevard hosts Carlos Mencia on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29. Mencia brings his signature high-energy stand-up to one of Sarasota's most beloved comedy venues. Shows start at 6:30 PM both nights, and tickets run from $75 to $82.
McCurdy's has been a downtown institution for years, and it consistently books national headliners that draw crowds from across the region. I always tell clients that if you want to experience the full range of Sarasota's entertainment scene, a night at McCurdy's followed by a late dinner on the bayfront is a great way to do it.
The Saturday Farmers Market: Still Going Strong
And of course, the Sarasota Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 7 AM to 1 PM on Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Late August means the summer produce is still at its peak. I have been loading up on local tomatoes, sweet corn, and fresh herbs every weekend.
