We're closing out July and heading into an action-packed first week of August on the Gulf Coast. Between the DanceSport Championships bringing international-level competition to town, the final weeks of the Summer Circus Spectacular, and some wonderful community events, there's so much to get out and enjoy. Here's what's on my radar.
Florida State DanceSport Championships
The 54th annual Florida State DanceSport Championships return to Sarasota from July 29 through August 2, hosted at the Bradenton Area Convention Center. This is one of the most anticipated competitive dance events in the Southeast, drawing top-tier dancers from around the world.
Throughout the long weekend, you can watch amateur and professional competitors perform everything from elegant waltz and foxtrot to high-energy Latin and rhythm dances. The costumes alone are worth the trip — glittering gowns, sharp tuxedos, and incredible athleticism on the dance floor. Pro/Am divisions run during the day, and the Professional Championship sessions in the evenings are where the real magic happens. The Saturday evening finals are particularly spectacular.
The convention center is about 20 minutes north of Palmer Ranch on US-41, and tickets are available at the door. Even if you've never watched competitive ballroom dance, I promise you'll be amazed by what these athletes can do. It's a wonderful date night or group outing.
Laser Light Nights at The Bishop
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature on the Bradenton Riverwalk is firing up Laser Light Nights from July 30 through August 1, with shows running Thursday through Saturday evenings. This is the immersive laser and light show inside the museum's planetarium dome, synchronized to music.
Each evening features multiple showtimes with different musical themes — classic rock, pop hits, and family-friendly options. The dome experience is unlike anything else on the Gulf Coast: you're surrounded by vibrant laser art pulsing to the music, all under the massive planetarium screen. It's about 25 minutes from Palmer Ranch, and the Bradenton Riverwalk area makes for a nice evening outing. Arrive early to stroll the Riverwalk, grab dinner at one of the waterfront spots, then catch a show under the dome.
Summer Circus Spectacular — Final Weeks
The Summer Circus Spectacular at The Ringling is entering its final weeks, running through August 8. Presented by the Circus Arts Conservatory and The Ringling, this show features world-class circus acts — jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, and clowns — performing in the intimate Historic Asolo Theater.
Showtimes are Tuesday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with Saturday shows at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children, which is an incredible value for professional circus arts. The Historic Asolo Theater is a beautiful space, and the summer circus has become a beloved annual tradition on the Gulf Coast. If you haven't caught it yet, grab tickets before it wraps up for the season.
While you're at The Ringling, the grounds are always worth exploring — the museum, the bayfront gardens, and the architecture are spectacular. Plan to spend a few hours and make a day of it.
Kids Summer Beach Runs
The Kids Summer Beach Runs continue through early August, with free 1-mile runs for kids ages 17 and under. The last few dates include Tuesday, July 28 at Siesta Beach and Wednesday, July 29 at Brohard Beach in Venice. Registration is free, and every finisher gets a ribbon. It's a wonderful program that gets kids active and outdoors during the summer months.
Saturday Sarasota Farmers Market
The Sarasota Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Summer produce is at its absolute peak right now — local corn, tomatoes, peaches, mangoes, and fresh-cut flowers are plentiful. The summer market has a relaxed pace with smaller crowds, making it the perfect time to visit and actually chat with the vendors. I've been making farmers market coffee and produce runs part of my Saturday ritual all summer long.
