Mid-July on the Gulf Coast has a rhythm all its own. The Fourth of July energy has settled into something quieter and more relaxed, the tourist crowds have thinned just enough, and the event calendar is filled with the kind of community gatherings that make you remember why you chose to live here. This week, I'm especially excited about Laser Light Nights at The Bishop, a brand-new cornhole and cocktails festival, and — of course — the World Cup Final on Sunday. Here's what's on my list for July 15–20.
Laser Light Nights at The Bishop Museum — July 16–18
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton is hosting Laser Light Nights Thursday through Saturday this week, and it's the kind of event that works for every age group. The museum transforms its galleries and planetarium into a laser-lit experience, with light shows projected to music, hands-on activities, and extended evening hours. It runs July 16–18, and it's a fantastic way to beat the heat while engaging with something genuinely creative.
The Bishop is about a 25-minute drive from the Palmer Ranch corridor, making it an easy evening outing. Check their website for showtimes and ticket availability — these events tend to draw a good local crowd, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
Cornhole & Cocktails Festival — Saturday, July 18
This one's new to the summer calendar, and I love the concept. The Cornhole & Cocktails Festival is happening Saturday, July 18 from 2:00–7:00 PM at the Manatee County Fairgrounds in Palmetto. Think competitive cornhole tournaments (for all skill levels), craft cocktails from local vendors, live music, and food trucks. It's the kind of laid-back, social summer event that feels perfectly suited to the Gulf Coast lifestyle.
The fairgrounds are located just north of the Manatee River, about 20 minutes from Palmer Ranch via I-75. Tickets are available at the gate, and you can register a cornhole team in advance if you're feeling competitive. I'm not promising I'll win any tournaments, but I'll definitely be there for the live music and the people-watching.
Christmas in July Arts & Crafts Show — Saturday, July 18
If cornhole isn't your speed, the Christmas in July Arts & Crafts Show at Urfer Family Park (4000 Honore Avenue) runs Saturday from 10:00 AM onward. Free admission, local artisans, handmade gifts, and holiday-themed crafts — it's a community tradition that always draws a cheerful crowd. Urfer Park is just north of the Palmer Ranch corridor, so it's an easy detour on your Saturday morning errands.
Sarasota & Venice Farmers Markets — Saturday, July 18
Both of the area's signature farmers markets are running this Saturday:
- Sarasota Farmers Market — 7:00 AM–1:00 PM on Main Street and Lemon Avenue in downtown Sarasota. This is the big one: eighty-plus vendors, live music, and summer produce at its peak — local mangoes, tropical flowers, and artisan breads that are worth waking up early for.
- Venice Farmers Market — 8:00 AM–Noon at Venice City Hall, 401 W. Venice Avenue. Smaller and more relaxed, with a loyal local following. If you're spending the day in Venice, this is the perfect way to start your morning.
World Cup Final Watch Party — Sunday, July 19
The FIFA World Cup Championship Final kicks off at 3:00 PM on Sunday at The Bay waterfront park in downtown Sarasota. Free large-screen broadcast, food trucks, and the kind of communal energy that only a World Cup final can generate. This has been one of the most popular events of the summer — arrive early if you want a good spot on the lawn.

- Ringling Summer Circus Spectacular — Through August 8 at the Historic Asolo Theater. Tue–Fri 11 AM & 2 PM, Sat 2 PM & 5 PM. A Sarasota summer tradition that never gets old, and the 2026 production is one of the best I've seen.
- "Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith" at Selby Gardens — Through September 13. A stunning photographic exhibition with portraits of Patti Smith and close-ups of flowers, set among the tropical gardens on the downtown Sarasota campus. On Wednesday, July 15 from 11 AM–12 PM, Regional Historian John McCarthy presented "Historic Photographers of the Sarasota Region" — a fascinating talk tied to the exhibition.
- Free Fitness at The Bay — Namaste Yoga (Thu 6 PM, Sat 8 AM), Mat Pilates (Mon 5:30 & 6:30 PM; Tue & Thu 7:30 AM), Bootcamp (Tue 6 PM), Tai Chi (Wed 8 AM). All free on the Sarasota waterfront.
- "Marvin: A Marvin Gaye Revue" — At The Donelly Theatre, 1012 N. Orange Avenue. Soul-music tribute performances throughout the week. Check for remaining showtimes.
Why This Week Captures the Summer Spirit
When I relocated from Michigan to Palmer Ranch, I wasn't sure what summer would look like on the Gulf Coast. Would it be too hot to enjoy the outdoors? Would everything shut down?
