If you have been following my blog for a while, you know I love discovering new places to eat and gather close to home. Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch has become one of my favorite destinations on the University Parkway corridor, and it just keeps getting better. With the Taste of the Ranch prix-fixe menu event wrapping up this weekend and new spots opening regularly, I wanted to share my personal guide to what is worth your time at Waterside Place and beyond.
What Is Waterside Place?
Waterside Place (7500 Island Cove Terrace, Lakewood Ranch) is a mixed-use town center anchored by a large central green space with a fountain, shaded walking paths, and outdoor seating areas. Think of it as a smaller, more pedestrian-friendly version of downtown Lakewood Ranch's Main Street. The architecture is modern Florida -- clean lines, neutral tones, lots of windows and outdoor patios. It is about 15 minutes from most Palmer Ranch neighborhoods via University Parkway, and the drive is easy.
What I appreciate most about Waterside Place is the variety. You can grab a quick coffee, sit down for a nice dinner, or meet friends for drinks and live music -- all within a few blocks of each other. The plaza is designed for lingering, with shaded benches, a grassy lawn, and a relaxed vibe that works equally well for a weekday lunch or a Saturday evening out.
Where I Eat at Waterside Place
Freckled Fin is my go-to for dinner at Waterside Place. The menu leans coastal with fresh seafood, tacos, and craft cocktails. The patio seating overlooks the green, making it a great spot for an early dinner as the sun goes down. During the Taste of the Ranch event, their prix-fixe dinner menu was a standout.
Overture Coffee is where I stop for a morning latte or an afternoon pick-me-up. The coffee is excellent, and they have a small selection of pastries and light bites. The indoor-outdoor layout means you can grab a table on the patio and watch the plaza come to life.
Ford's Garage brings a fun, automotive-themed atmosphere with burgers, craft beer, and milkshakes. It is a popular spot for families and groups, and the patio seating is dog-friendly. The service is consistently good, and the portions are generous.
Beyond Waterside Place: Other Dining Near Palmer Ranch
The University Parkway and Cattlemen Road corridors have seen an explosion of new dining options over the past year. Yugen Omakase on Cattlemen Road offers a Japanese tasting menu experience that rivals anything in downtown Sarasota. Blu Kouzina serves exceptional Greek cuisine in a warm, inviting space. And Peachey's Baking Co. is my favorite spot for morning pastries and bread -- their croissants are as good as anything I have had in Paris.

My August Dining Tip
August is a wonderful time to explore the Sarasota dining scene. The crowds are thinner than in peak season, reservations are easier to come by, and the summer produce at places like the Sarasota Farmers Market (Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street) is at its absolute peak. I like to start my Saturday with the farmers market, pick up fresh local ingredients, and then head to a brunch spot like Overture Coffee for a slow morning. It is the kind of relaxed weekend rhythm that makes Gulf Coast summers so special.
