August is one of my favorite months for dining out on the Gulf Coast. The crowds have thinned from the spring peak, the restaurants are still fully staffed, and the evening temperatures are just right for patio dining. I have been exploring some new spots and returning to old favorites. Here is where you will find me eating this month.
Marina Jacks: The Sunset Ritual
Marina Jacks (2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota) is a year-round staple, but August evenings here are something special. The sun sets over Sarasota Bay and the dining room and patio both offer front-row seats. I love going on a weeknight when it is a little quieter, ordering the grouper prepared however the chef is doing it that night, and watching the boats come in and out of the marina.
The raw bar is excellent year-round, and the summer cocktail menu usually features some refreshing citrus options. If you time it right, you can catch the sunset from the patio, then move to the lounge for live music later in the evening. It is about 15 minutes north of Palmer Ranch up US-41, and the drive along the bay is part of the experience.
St. Armands Circle Patios
St. Armands Circle is my go-to when I want a true evening out. The Circle has so many patios that catching one without a wait is easy in August. Cafe L'Europe has a beautiful courtyard patio that feels like a European piazza, draped with bougainvillea and lit by string lights after dark. Their summer menu features lighter options including fresh salads and grilled seafood that pair perfectly with the evening air.
For something more casual, Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar & Grill has covered patio seating with tropical fans that keep the air moving even on warm evenings. Their coconut shrimp and rum drinks are a summer tradition. After dinner, a walk around the Circle with its fountains and boutique windows is the perfect way to end the night. Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch
Just 15 minutes from Palmer Ranch up University Parkway, Waterside Place has become a dining destination in its own right. Freckled Fin continues to impress with its locally sourced seafood menu and elevated cocktails. Their outdoor seating overlooks the fountain plaza, which is especially lovely in the evenings when the lights come on and the mist from the fountain cools the air.
Ford's Garage at Waterside is another patio option with a more casual vibe. Think burgers, craft beers, and a retro service station atmosphere that is fun without trying too hard. The plaza at Waterside Place hosts live music on many weekends, so you can plan your dinner around the entertainment. Check the calendar for what is coming up.
Venice Avenue: A Quiet Evening Option
For a more relaxed pace, I love heading south to Venice Avenue. The downtown stretch from the historic train depot to the beach has several restaurants with sidewalk seating that feels wonderfully unhurried in the summer. Cassariano Italian Eatery has a covered patio where you can watch the evening strollers go by while enjoying handmade pasta and a nice wine list. The drive down US-41 from Palmer Ranch takes about 20 minutes and is well worth it for the change of scenery.
Venice also has the Sharky's on the Pier venue for live music with Vince Berardi & The Chill playing Friday, August 7, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Nothing beats dinner on the pier with live music and the Gulf breeze.
Dog-Friendly Patio Dining
My three dogs do not let me forget that they also enjoy a night out. The good news is that many of the patios I mentioned welcome well-behaved dogs. Marina Jacks' patio is dog-friendly, and several St. Armands Circle restaurants with outdoor seating allow dogs on the patio.
