Late Summer Evenings in Sarasota: Scott Curts at Marina Jacks, Sunset Yoga at The Bay & My August Night Sky Rituals

There is something about mid-August evenings on the Gulf Coast that feels different from any other time of year. The heat of the day softens, the light turns honey-gold, and after sunset the sky opens up in ways that remind you why you live here. This week, the Perseid meteor shower peaks, Scott Curts takes the Blue Sunshine Patio stage at Marina Jacks on Thursday, and Sunset Yoga at The Bay continues its weekly rhythm. Here is my local's guide to making the most of late August evenings in Sarasota.

Scott Curts at Marina Jacks: Thursday Night Music on the Water

Thursday, August 13 from 5 to 9 p.m., musician Scott Curts performs at the Blue Sunshine Patio at Marina Jacks (2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota). Marina Jacks is one of my favorite spots for an early dinner with live music, and the Blue Sunshine Patio sits right on Sarasota Bay with views of the marina and the Ringling Bridge. Scott Curts brings an acoustic set that ranges from classic covers to original tunes, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.

Marina Jacks is about 15 minutes north of Palmer Ranch up US-41, and parking is available in the paid lot on site or the nearby Bayfront garage. I like to arrive around 5 p.m. to grab a table on the patio and watch the light change over the water as the evening sets in. The menu features fresh seafood, Florida craft beers, and inventive cocktails. If you have not been to Marina Jacks for a Thursday evening show, this is a great week to start.

Free Sunset Yoga at The Bay

Every week, The Bay (1055 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota) hosts free outdoor fitness classes on the waterfront lawn, and Sunset Yoga is one of the most popular. Check their weekly schedule, but typically you will find Sunset Yoga on weekday evenings around 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m., led by local instructors from Sarasota Bay Yoga and other area studios. The class is suitable for all levels, and you just need to bring a mat and water.

The setting is what makes it special. The class takes place on the great lawn overlooking Sarasota Bay, with the Ringling Bridge in the background and the sky changing from blue to pink to orange as you move through the poses. After class, many people stay for a stroll along the waterfront or a drink at the on-site cafe. The Bay has become one of Sarasota's most cherished public spaces since its redevelopment, and these free programs are a big reason why. It is a beautiful way to end a summer day.

The Perseid Meteor Shower: Best Viewing on the Gulf Coast

The Perseid meteor shower peaks this week, and on a clear night away from city lights, you can see dozens of meteors per hour streaking across the sky. The shower has been active since mid-July and reaches its peak around August 11–13. Florida's late summer evenings, with their warm temperatures and clear skies, make for ideal meteor-watching conditions.

For the best viewing, I recommend heading to Siesta Key Beach or Nokomis Beach after midnight, when the constellation Perseus is high in the sky. The darkness over the Gulf provides excellent visibility. Bring a blanket, bug spray, and a sense of wonder. If the beaches feel too far, the Legacy Trail access points near Palmer Ranch offer dark, open stretches where you can park and look up at the stars without light pollution from the city. It is one of those simple, magical experiences that makes living here so rewarding.

For an organized viewing event, check with the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature (201 10th Street West, Bradenton). They often host telescope viewing nights and the Planetarium runs special celestial shows. It is about 25 minutes from Palmer Ranch, but well worth the drive for a family-friendly astronomy experience.

Late Summer Evening Rituals Worth Adopting

If you have not settled into a late summer evening routine yet, here are a few of my personal favorites:

  • Early dinner on a dog-friendly patio. The Cottage on Siesta Key and Libby's Neighborhood Brasserie on South Osprey Avenue both welcome leashed dogs on their patios, and the evening temperatures make outdoor dining a pleasure again. For more dog-friendly dining ideas, check out my dog-friendly patios guide.
  • A walk on the Legacy Trail at dusk. The crushed gravel path is shaded, the light is beautiful, and the wildlife becomes more active as the sun goes down. Enter at the Center Road access point for a peaceful evening walk.
  • Rooftop cocktails at the Art Ovation Hotel. The rooftop bar at Art Ovation (1255 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota) has panoramic views of downtown and Sarasota Bay. The IMPROV: 70's Game Show hosted by Florida Studio Theatre runs Sundays at 6 p.m. and is complimentary.
  • A Friday evening at the Van Wezel. Even during summer, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall hosts occasional shows. Check their calendar for August performances.

Late summer on the Gulf Coast has its own quiet rhythm, and I find it one of the most peaceful times of the year. If you are thinking about making this area your home, I would love to help you explore the communities that make this lifestyle possible. Reach out anytime and let's start the conversation.
