August evenings on the Gulf Coast have a magic that is hard to describe to anyone who has not experienced it. The heat of the day breaks, the breeze off Sarasota Bay picks up, and the whole area seems to exhale. Over the years, I have developed a collection of evening rituals that I look forward to all summer long. Here are my favorites for late August on the Gulf Coast.
Rooftop Cocktails at Art Ovation Hotel
The Art Ovation Hotel (1255 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota) has a rooftop lounge that delivers one of the best sunset views in downtown Sarasota. Overlooking the Sarasota skyline and the bay, the rooftop is furnished with modern lounge seating, fire pits, and an excellent craft cocktail program. The view stretches from the Ringling Bridge all the way to Bird Key, and on clear evenings you can watch the sun sink into the Gulf in a blaze of orange and pink.
What makes the Art Ovation rooftop special is that it is also a gathering place for the arts community. The hotel regularly hosts artist talks, live music, and cultural events. On Sundays, you can catch IMPROV: 70's Game Show from Florida Studio Theatre at 6 p.m., a free comedy event that pairs perfectly with a pre-dinner cocktail. And on Sunday, August 23, the hotel is hosting the Summer Art Mart, an outdoor market featuring local artists and makers. It is about 15 minutes from Palmer Ranch up US-41, and valet parking makes arrival easy.
Jazz Thursdays & Live Music Sessions
One of my favorite discoveries this summer has been the live jazz scene around town. Jazz Thursdays at the Sarasota Art Museum (1001 South Tamiami Trail) feature rotating local artists performing in the museum's courtyard. The setting is beautiful, the acoustics are excellent, and the museum café serves wine and small plates during the performances. It is the kind of evening that feels both cultural and relaxed.
On Monday, August 10, Jazz Jam SRQ takes over at a downtown venue (check local listings for the exact location) starting at 7 p.m. This is an open jam session where local musicians gather to play standards and originals. The audience is a mix of serious jazz fans and curious newcomers, and the atmosphere is wonderfully unpretentious. If you play an instrument, bring it. If you just want to listen, pull up a chair and order a drink.
For a different tempo, Marina Jacks' Blue Sunshine Patio hosts live music throughout the week. The acoustic sets on weeknights are especially lovely for a relaxed dinner with music in the background. I went last Thursday and the guitarist was playing a mix of classic rock and contemporary covers, just loud enough to set the mood without overwhelming conversation.
Sunset on the Ringling Bridge
There is no bad time to walk the Ringling Bridge, but late August evenings are when it truly shines. The pedestrian walkway on the north side of the bridge gives you panoramic views of Sarasota Bay, Bird Key, and the Gulf beyond. Start at the bayfront side and walk toward St. Armands as the sun begins to drop. The breeze off the water is reliably cooler than anywhere on land, and the light show over the water is different every single time.
After the walk, St. Armands Circle is right there with dozens of restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite. I like to stop at one of the Circle's patios for a glass of wine and watch the evening settle over the boutiques and fountains. The whole experience takes about two hours and costs nothing except what you choose to spend on dinner.
Dog-Friendly Evening Walks
My Chihuahuas and my Doberman have strong opinions about our evening routine, and they have made it clear that August evening walks are non-negotiable. The Legacy Trail near the Palmer Ranch access points is our go-to after the sun has dropped low enough for the shade to take over. The crushed gravel path is easy on paws, and the tree canopy keeps the trail noticeably cooler than the surrounding pavement.
